On those machines (and ones with similar contacts like my Bobcat 225nt) it's a good practice to move through the contacts every time you use it.

It's even in my Bobcat manual to do that. Keeps them from getting corroded I suppose.

For what you are doing, thick-to-thin won't really be that bad.

Once joined, just keep heat to the thick side and the puddle will stay with you.

The simplest setup is just a torch and cable, clip your stick stinger on the cable end and scratch start.

That's what I do on my miller bobcat 225nt. It doesn't have tig setting.

No DC output, and a loud hum like the machine is working hard, are good indications of a bad rectifier.

It's a valid method for thin stuff. I've done it on thin farm sheet metal with 3/32" 6011.

I just overlapping tack-tack it together, grind a little to make sure it's clean, then weld it better as needed.

I wouldn't do this on anything structural naturally, just for thin stuff where needed.

I think you'll really like the 17 size on steel.
I've melted a few 26 torches on AC for aluminum, but DC I've had better luck running too hot without melting down.
Then I made a water cooler system from a new-old-stock carbonator and now I love water cooled torches

For anything small, I prefer my blast cabinet.

Here's some info from AWS D1.1 and a simplistic example of one.

Also check that the post flow timer is sending power to it.
