Re: Downhill Downhill Downhill

This was a downhand socket weld with 1/8" 6010 95 amps. I thought I had a pic that would show a cap I did today downhand but it is all fuzzy and crap. http://i1242.photobucket.com/albums/gg540/forrestderp/IMGP0412_zps61da2827.jpg The jungle gym I welded up over the past couple o days, most of i...

If you are worried about the copper just take some sandpaper to it and wipe it down with acetone

Re: Soft vs. Crisp?

Soft is lower volts higher amps cusp us higher volts lower amps, i prefer really soft settings on cap to reduce chances of undercut.

If you want to do pipeline learn to layout and fit a branch test, most places will test with that.

Re: having issues with root pass.

Hey man, where are you located? Some pictures are worth a ton of words, amperage will depend on comfort level and experience I think. With Tig I like zero land and a gap smaller than my filler wire, but not by much. Or a gap about the same size as the filler is also acceptable. When I was learning t...

Hmm my pipeliner works pretty well on tig!

I don't think one of those fancy autoshades would last me more than a month before it would be all broken. Cool deal though to those guys who weld and go home clean.

Re: 3G Downhill filler pass question

This may be kinda late, but I run all my root passes on pipe downhill with 6010. 7018 you can forget about running downhill, doesn't work, you will also run into 7010 and 8010 if you are planning a career in pipe, you should also be able to run both uphill and downhill with any of those rods. My fit...

Re: Razor blade welding

Nice work. Are those Stanley's? If so these are the .024's. how long of a taper did you have on that 1/8" tungsten? They are the "were on sale for $.99 blades", I think they are pretty close to the stanleys I have done. The taper actually isn't that excessively long, I have a fine gr...

Re: What am I doing wrong

If you can just use your foot peddle as a switch, your rod hand has much more effect on your bead than your torch hand. Just start padding beads and be very critical of the effects from your input, and once you get it down without a peddle the puddle will feel like cheat mode.

I have to lean toward "fixing the mistakes of others" as my least favorite, since this usually includes my other "not happy" welds, standing on my head in the mirror, where the original weldor was not qualified to attempt it. Steve S I actually kinda enjoy mirror welding, and pr...

Other people's mistakes. This^ most things are fairly easily repaired or welded following proper procedures. Last winter a friend brought me a leaking hydraulic cylinder that he tried to do a silver solder repair on, took me about twice as long with the tig chasing that stuff out than it would have...

Heck, if you can weld and weld good and fast and well. Just call a place that is hiring and ask to talk to shop foreman, and ask him for a weld test. Just be damn sure you can pass the test before going in. The industry is hurting for good hands right now, and I know of places that are in need of ha...

Re: weld repair on 2'' sch40 natural gas line

I weld on propane pipe for my current job, I typically either vent the line and blow it out with compressed air, or do a burn down of the gas with a burner before welding with 6010 root and 7018 cap on SCH80. The other day I had to add a T and a valve into a vapor line on a propane tank, the owner c...
