Re: Newby Question. Should I learn all 3 at once?

No. You have to learn how to weld first. If you can't weld with an O/A torch you're not a welder.Period. From there you go stick, then TIG(while O/A work is fresh in the brain---both hands working). THEN . You don't even need to "learn" MIG. Just pull the trigger and, because you can alrea...

Re: Newbie here, are these "good" welds for an exhaust pipe?

You'll see that a lot in what I call "production" custom parts. The clown who owns the company wants welders for $8/hr to put out high numbers of several hundred or thousand dollar parts. They get EAXACTLY what they pay for. The unsuspecting conned_sumer doesn't know any better "It lo...

Re: Looking to buy metal saw..

I had the Dewalt. Vice was garbage. Sold it. I have the 12" Makita and a 14" Morse..and a 8" Milwaukee circular metal muncher. I use the Makita the most. The Milwaukee on plate. The Morse on occasion for bigger angle-tube and especially pipe. It has the V jaws in the vice. I made V-jaw...

Re: Acetylene

I refilled my 'B size' hobby tank of acetylene yesterday for $75 CAD in Calgary, Alberta. When I got home, the girlfriend had a surprise for me. Two more 'B size' (40 cu/ft) tanks of acetylene for free from her work place. They wanted to get rid of them, so I got them for free. I also got three ver...

A wire wheel can fly off the bench grinder, go through your eye and penetrate your brainz( small target).

I'm pretty sure the polarity is correct, I bought it used and it was set up for mig when I got it. I have the gas setup and I did some reaserch to make sure the flow was right but it didn't make a difference, neither did adjusting heat or wire speed. Let me guess. You're welding old bed frame"...

Not a bunch. Added some 3/4 pipe braces, made a 1 1/2 x 1/8 angle frame and tossed some 3/4/9 expanded on it for a drop shelf. Coat of roof paint.Wire wheeled and Ospho'd the top. 3 coats of floor wax.Good to go until next year. I think I'll make some extensions to slide into that 1x2 tube for longe...

Thanks for the advise and quick replies. I talked with our welding supervisor about changing to a different wire brand as recommended here. He said that he has already talked to the "chief" about a better brand of wire but he is dead set on using Alcotec 5356. Thanks again for all...

Re: first use of new hobart handler 190

Position the material at a 45* or so angle, thick piece to the top and thin underneath. Do a horizontal weld in a Z up and down and delay a tick longer on the high(thick) side. Set the machine just hot enough to blow through the 1/8 IF you were to delay too long down there. That means close to maxed ...

My take ? Unless aluminum is a regular thing, or will be, forget the AC.I used to tig alum quite a bit years ago.I was good ! Now I need it a couple times of year at most.I take it to a dude who does it all day every day.It would take me months doing on a daily basis to even ettempt to do what he do...

Yep, balance. AHP is bass ackwards. re-set to 25% and immediately started laying down beads. Moved too slow at first and got hot cracking. set amps to 150, got on the pedal, and started motoring with no problem. 1/8 4043. 1/16 melted before I got close to the puddle. Thank you everyone! interesting, does that mean no thumb switches in those situations too? Yep. Our grinders must stop if we let go. Triggers or paddle switches. I've worked several jobs that were like that. Steve S I'd find another job. Aint no way I'm grinding all day with a P.O.S. paddle. ESPECIALLY if the nanny lo...

Buy 4 cases of beer and Jody's video series. Have a sit down. So. /Before you weld plates together you'll need a way to cut them. After you cut them you'll need to grind them. After you weld them you'll need to drill holes in them. After you do that you'l need to paint them. Now you'll need to bolt them to something so nobody steals them. Do you have tools for...
