yup tell me about it. Have tons of collets/collet bodies, cups in normal, stubby, pyrex, even one with custom made screens, lol. Have about 10 tig torches--standard, flex long neck, micro, roto-head, three sets of CK water cooled cables, etc

Re: I have some beginner questions
Both of those get better with practice. No one starts out making bad-ass beads at lightning speed. It's all about heat control via learning how to read the puddle. Control the heat input into the puddle, and it will surrender-eventually. But you actually have to go out there and do it, in order to f...

Small = lighter and easier to maneuver
larger= can handle more heat (or for longer periods of time) before it literally starts burning your hand
take your pick.

Re: Initial TIG setup for SS Sheetmetal
Tungsten diameter will depend on the amperage you need to run. Google "tungsten diameter amperage" and hit the "Images" link, and you can see many charts that will give you a rough estimate. For the cup size, get the largest gas lens you can run, so you can run the largest cup. A...

I'm assuming you're talking about tungsten erosion. It's normal. Think spark plugs. Same thing.

Re: Adding Filler Metal
Both can be acceptable---it depends more so on the type of joint you're doing. If you're doing small diameter round tubing it doesn't make too much sense in trying to lay a wire that you'll just have to be moving around all the time. For the most part you will and to add filler by dabbing it at the ...

Re: Cup Size
Yup, depends on what you're doing. Big enough to shield the arc, puddle, and tungsten, but not so big that you're just wasting argon. So what are you doing?

Re: Candle Wax to help remove a broken tap?
He actually explains it in the video. He mentions that the wax addition (after the weld build-up is done, but while the parts are still very hot) works because it does not evaporate like most oils, due to the high flash point of liquid wax but rather it stays liquid long enough for it to work itself...

Very good advice. I have the Miller GTAW Handbook saved on a ZIP file that goes over stuff like this, if anyone wants the link to it.

Ah ok, that makes sense. Just as much heat going into the tungsten as going into the cans.

Re: Who welds at 3 Amps DC or 5 Amps AC
I probably couldn't see anything at 3-5 amps  I just welded a pop can for the first time actually - had it set to max on my low range at 48 amps and used them all. wait a minute, 48A to weld pop cans? Something sounds off on that '63 Airco. :) what kind of balance does that machine run on AC?

Whatever you do, do not weld like they do in the Cebora videos on youtube. Absolutely Horrid.

The only thing it will hurt is one's ego; tubing is VERY difficult and it will humble you very quickly.

If you haven't tig'd before, your best bet would be to do butt joints for practice, instead of just going right at it into coped/notched joints. But its your project

Re: practicing roll cage welds
Yea a 4" long piece will get heat soaked fast while welding it at ~120A. What I would personally do is this: get a long piece of steel, to simulate the heat sinking of the much larger frame. Try 6ft or so. Slice right down the middle, so two 3ft sections. Weld them together to make it back into...

Re: My poor attempt at being a TIG welder! HELP
I can see how spreading out the argon beyond the diameter of the cup would help, which seems to be the point with those scotchbrite type diffusers. I think the idea behind those, is that even through they promote some turbulence, it's a form of "controlled" turbulence since the presence of...

You see. The thing I don't understand is on that picture you posted above, you can clearly see how you have started and stopped, but it's still very uniform, how does that happen? Obviously once you stop the material cools and wen you start again it changes again..... Yet how is there a uniform pud...
