Re: Beginner needing input on equipment

Are the pyrex cups preferred over the traditional Alumina cups? What would be the cost of locally bought 10# box of 4043 3/32 or 1/16? Shipping prices in list below for each. Pyrex, from what I've read are not preferred over traditional alumina cups simply because if you drop them, they can break. ...

Re: Beginner needing input on equipment

If the cost of a 10pk of 2%La tungstens deters you, this might be the wrong hobby for you. But seriously, you can't go wrong with 2%La. The 20series tig torch already has small consumables/cups/etc, so there is no need for a stubby kit to exist. Any shorter and you'll be burning up the torch r...

Re: tig chrome molly

First check your polarity. Tig torch has to be on the Neg terminal, ground clamp on the positive one. Next make sure you are on DC, not AC. Wrong polarity or on AC will cause balling of the tungsten. If you tell us the settings on your machine it would make diagnosing things easier for everyone.

I actually haven't even used it at all, LOL. On my welding cart where I have my Invertig221, I normally have a watercooled 24 torch hooked up, and have a WeldTec Rotohead rolled up on the side as well. I just bought it for the hell of it.

Re: CK gas lens kit question...

Exactly....no stubby for 9/20 torches, those are the "regular" sizes. The regular cups and gas lens cups all end up being pretty much the same size in the grand scheme of things. For the 7/18/26 there is definitely stubby/medium/large gas lens. The only size larger is the large (15/16"...

Yea there's no "stubby" kit for a 9/20 series; it's as small as it gets, unless you go with a 24 series: http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u235/musico79/welding/IMG_20140405_161658_945_zpsieauql5t.jpg or shrink it down to a micro size  http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u235/musi...

Where is a good place to buy supplies online? I may have misunderstood you, but the guy at airgas said that 1/16 tungsten would fit in a #7 cups medium gas lens. It have to be a #6 cup. Anyways they don't ever have much to choose from in the store, so where can I get some of this stuff online? Than...

Re: couple of hours back at tig after 14 years

not that I can do any better, but to get real critique you need to slice it down the middle perpendicular to the weld bead direction in order to see the penetration into the root of the joint. THAT is what tells all, pretty beads aside.

For filler rod, I picked up an assortment of types and sizes at my LWS in 1-pound tubes. I suspect with shipping, buying locally for filler rod will be the cheaper option, though I've got my eye on 10x 10-pound boxes of rod at mwsco.com that seems to be a smoking price (though maybe a lifetime supp...

Yep, I've been using 1/16" electrodes, but sounds like I could do to sharpen them a little pointier, thanks. Or just get one of these from HTP (thanks Paul). If this can't get into an acute angle, nothing can. :D http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u235/musico79/welding/IMG_20140505_195312_823_...

Was wanting to do it stainless to have it be something I'd only have to do once, but it sounds like getting good results with stainles...

Well the you have no choice but to pony up the cash and just buy it. Complaining about availability won't get them to you any cheaper. :) If you need them you need them. Here is how I hold my tungstens for sharpening. The air cooled 9 series pencil torch allows a full length 7" electrode to go all the way down the body so long as the power hose is not attached to the torch. Just put the collet & collet body in, tighten and give it a few turns on the grinder...

Re: Welding acute angles on thinwall tubing joints

Since it's only 0.063" wall, you should be at most using a 1/16" electrode. Lots of missing info here. If for one you are trying to use a 3/32" electrode, unless you have a taper that is 8-10x the electrode diameter, you won't have a "pointed" enough electrode and that cause...

Re: running away from tig

a 3" air grinder with a 1/16" or a 0.045" thickness abrasive wheel will quickly take care of a contaminated tungsten. In fact, that is what I use to chop up a tungsten on purpose for the electrodes on my 24 series torch, which have to be 1"-1.25" in length. I then chuck them...

The best thing would be to take it to your LWS so they can have a look at it and see if they have the necessary fittings.

I suppose that is plausible, but if it is a block worth saving, then it must be worth something, and the owner shouldn't mind buying some Nickel99 (I believe it is called), a brand new drill bit, and a brand new tap.
