Re: Flattening down aluminum weld beads?

Well, let's say 1-3mm thick, outside corner weld. Something like this ramps, for example:

Re: Flattening down aluminum weld beads?

And what about other types of joint, like an outside corner joint for example, where you have to smooth the weld out and round the corner for cosmetic reasons? Assuming you've got enough penetration, I would suppose that would not be a problem, wouldn't it?

Flattening down aluminum weld beads?

Hi guys,
I've read different opinions on the matter, so I'd like to hear your thoughts also: is it ok to flatten down weld beads on aluminum, or it takes away to much strenght from the weld, imposing too big of a cracking risk?
Many thanks!

Re: Crap at the start of a weld bead

I do not have pre-flow, and the torch is quite sensible, so that when I press the button both gas and wire start.
For the moment I'm running a short bead on a piece of scrap, and then quickly move onto the piece, but that's not a viable solution long term.
I'll try to up the gas flow, however!

Re: Crap at the start of a weld bead

I've tried with the tip recessed, the tip flush and the tip slightly out (about 1mm)... always porosity... :(

Crap at the start of a weld bead

Hi guys, recently when I start a bead, I get porosity at the start of it, like if the gas wasn't flowing for the first 1-2 seconds. After that, everything goes like a charm, with a solid, pretty bead. Obviously tack welds are awful... Gas flow is about 14-15 lpm (a little more than 30cfh), I've trie...

Hi Darth,
have you got any pictures/plans of your homemade tube bender? I would be very pleased if you could post them up...
Thank you!

Re: Looking for an AC/DC TIG Welder, need advice

Yeah, having a combo unit looks great on paper, but it's really a pain in the bottom to switch every time, and that's one of the reasons why I'm upgrading from my DC combo unit to a dedicate AC/DC tig welder.. ;) I think that I will go with the second one, even though is MOSFET instead of IGBT but w...

Looking for an AC/DC TIG Welder, need advice

Hi guys, I’ve sent a similar email to Jody and I thought it was a good idea to ask also your opinion to help me in buying a new TIG welder. I already have a very basic DC plasma-stick-tig welder, but I’d like something with more amps and with AC capabilities, to give aluminum a shot. Searching on eb...

MIG welding Stainless Steel

Hi guys, I'm going to give a try to MIG weld some 2mm 304 stainless steel. I've read somewhere that for single-pass the classical 75%/25% Ar-Co2 mixture it's acceptable, so I think I will start with that one (which I already have). But what about the purging gas for the backside? Can I use pure Argo...
