Re: practicing on 16 gauge tubing
Pretty much Daniel. They have different designations. Just make sure its solid wire and not flux core! E-electrode R-rod 70-tensile strength in kpsi S#-silicone/additional metal content haha, I wonder what would happen if you used flux core wire? I'm kind of tempted to try it just to see what kind ...

Re: practicing on 16 gauge tubing
You can straighten by putting in a drill and clamping the other end in a vise and twist it, or hold it with vise grips. Len I've done this with two strands and it works well but does it work with a single strand? if it works out and you get tired of straightening mig wire (I did), I got some .045 a...

Re: practicing on 16 gauge tubing
Don't know if this will help but I find using slightly smaller filler rod than the wall thickness helps with using less amps and less heat for a smaller and sometimes more aesthetic bead. Of course, you run into the possibility of undercutting. if fit up is perfect, I'd use .045. On my round tube s...

Re: source for metal threaded inserts?
Pack of 25 I saw those, but I am concerned about the chamfered corners of the nut. With MIG, it would be no problem, I can squirt all the filler material I want all over the gap. But with TIG, I'm not so good at filling gaps, that's something I need to work on. If they had those with no chamfered c...

I've only been dabbling with aluminum, only running beads on flat metal, haven't tried joints yet. I will definitely remember this thread when it comes time to tack welding aluminum joints.

Re: source for metal threaded inserts?
I guess anti-seize is ok to get real hot? No bad fumes? I don't have a fume extractor, I just make sure there's no paint, zinc, or any other coatings on the metal.
I'll definitely keep that in mind if/when I ever put some nuts welded into thicker metal where the heat is alot higher.

practicing on 16 gauge tubing
Getting ready to make some more furniture, this time I want to TIG weld them instead of MIG. So, I'm practicing up to get my TIG welds looking nice and pretty! I really haven't had much time to TIG since I purchased it, almost everything I've done I just switched back to MIG to bang it out because I...

Re: source for metal threaded inserts?
I'd suggest keeping a tap or two in the thread size handy. Sometimes the weld will distort the nuts enough to make them difficult to thread your feet into, so it's nice to be able to chase the threads after a test fit, if needed. Steve S Indeed, I do that! I'll have to get another tap for these squ...

Re: source for metal threaded inserts?
Ok, so I did have some tubing and a square nut that were already the correct size (but not the size tubing I normally use). So, I did a test, and I think this will work out fine! I let the nut stick out from the tubing maybe 3/16", and just melted them together, no filler. Not sure if using fil...

mcmaster is the first place I looked. The only square nuts they sell that are 7/8" wide, are made out of fiberglass, not steel.rick9345 wrote:http://www.mcmaster.com/#square-nuts/=t4e3zl

Re: source for metal threaded inserts?
you know what, maybe I'm over thinking this. Maybe just a simple square nut would work, if I could find one that fits pretty well inside the tubing without to much play. I'm gonna head to the local ace hardeware and see if they have any square nuts that are 7/8" wide (I guess that would be a 1/...

Yea, I've seen ones like that, meant for suspension links. But they are usually to large, and solid (expensive). I've not found any that fit inside a 1" square tubing.Braehill wrote:Daniel,

source for metal threaded inserts?
After making several pieces of furniture out of 1" square tubing, I told myself that next time I need to find a better looking and more efficient way to add leveling feet on the bottoms of the tubing. Well, it's that time! This is what I'm looking for, basically a bare steel version of th...

Re: small horizontal bandsaw?
Guys: I was at Harbor Freight last night and saw a small horiz/vert bandsaw for around $269. I've stayed away from H/F in the past just because of the poor quality. I've also looked at Jet B/S's for around $600. While I have many projects currently that may not last so I'm trying to justify the cos...

Re: undercutting or underfilling tube joints
just curious, when you want to cut one of these T joints open to look at the welds, what's the best way to go about it? cut it right down the middle (down the T) and then just keep cutting each piece in 1/2 until you're satisfied that it looks good?

useful charts and print-outs
I'm starting to organize my garage a bit more, and one thing I'd like to do is have some useful charts and print outs that I can refer to. For example, like this one below, converts from fractions to decimals and millimeters. I wish this chart had gauges on it as well, but I'm sure I can find others...
