Re: Melnor torch?

I thought of all places, this group might know. I went to the local welding supply to get Oxy, and he didn't have any idea either. I don't have any welding tips for this, but he said it's old, and that the thread size on the mixing chamber is larger than anything he has now. It had a Victor tip in i...

Melnor torch?

I just picked up a pair of tanks and a couple heads with cutting tips on them. One is a Melnor? I can't seem to find any info on it. It's a sliver torch, has a diamond shaped stamp on the head and body, and only has Melnor stamped on the thumb trigger. Can anyone tell me anything about this torch?

A standard mail box works...as long as you place it between two second wood fence posts. Corner posts are just overkill.

Re: modifying a 3pt hitch on a spray rig....

IMHO, a few hundred gal on those casters is pretty extreme. My solution would be to find an old axle with springs, do away with the casters and hitch, and put a tongue on it. You've got a frame to mount it all on, and if the unit is used with another piece of equipment, at least you could pull it be...

Re: 7018AC rod problem

One thing I did notice - The flux is a LOT more fragile than the other rods I'm used to. These things don't like being roughed up at all. I have no idea how I knocked the flux coating off of 2 inches of the top of one of the rods.

Filler rod curiosity

Had an old timer tell me hanger wire is good filler rod for acetylene welding. When I filled a hole in the bed of my truck one day, I found it did work well.

I'm just curious, but in a pinch, has anyone ever used a hanger for tig welding?

Re: 7018AC rod problem

Well, that solved it. Lincoln 7018AC ran about as good as anything else I've run. Heck, I think I like it better than 7014 even. Ran some really nice looking welds (ok, a couple weren't that pretty, but they were solid). Rods welded quite nicely at about 115 - 120 amps. Easy starts and limited stick...

I did the exact same project back in school. Made mine from round stock, bent the triangle, left the top long and bent it out. Great little project, and handy as heck. Beats leaning against the truck :D

Guys, I was referring to the term lohys... ......apparently humor doesn't translate well on here. My bad. :geek: Seriously though Steve, I get what you're saying. I'm the same way normally. With that being said though, even 10 lbs of rod will become old stock in my hands. Since I revived this welder...

Re: 7018AC rod problem

You could always scourer ebay for some large diodes and build yourself a rectifier. Then grandpa's ole buzz box could run on DC as well. I just wish I knew this stuff well enough. I think it would be fun to custom build a setup of some kind. 6011 are harder to run than an AC7018, so if theyre going...

If you're gonna quote me then put the whole thing up. I was referring to the AC 7018 rods actually run better on DC and you should try other rods more suitable to that machine like 7014.   Rake, you apparently didn't catch the  :D at the end. ;) I wish I had the newer equi...

Re: 7018AC rod problem

Did you check with a voltmeter to determine which tap gives you the highest OCV? I've noticed on past AC units I've had that the low tap has a higher OCV than the high tap. As a result, the rods light easier and run better with less pop-outs (arc goes out). The owners manuals have also stated to us...

Re: 7018AC rod problem

My theory is 7018 is so prone to stick, we always rock back and forth to break it free. If you could keep the flux even with the filler they wouldn't scratch start too bad. Once they light and the rod tip is hot enough, it is a great rod AC or DC. I'm going to try an instant lighting propane torch ...

Well, I had a chance to give this an honest try tonight. I got the rod to light several times. Stuck it a few times, but overall, it sucked. I figured out what is happening. First off, the Hobart rods are not in an oven. I'm not sure if this is the entire reason, but I believe the flux is th...

Just commenting on trailer welds. When I did my project for my trailer, I had to remove some factory welds (see trailer storage box). Apparently not all trailers are created equal, because these were a bear to get off.

I was rather happy when I went to put the box on my trailer. The two center supports for the override rail were in my way and had to be cut out to move. They were on there but good! I was impressed. It's a Ttrax.

I was always told to never weld on a vehicle without hanging a chain from the vehicle and laying it on the ground(dirt). That goes back farther than I am old. I always do it anyway.

Re: 7018AC rod problem

Wow, this is starting to sound like I should be lighting up pretty much like any other rod. It's far from that for sure. I hardly ever stick anything else I've used, so I should be able to get a light even if I can't keep it going. I'm going to check some stuff out. I'll check back in if I get it lit.

Back to the old welder - I can't make out in that picture - but where the leads plug in it seems like there's a spare place - could be another voltage tapping - would need a closer picture to say for sure. There's low, medium, high, cutting, and ground taps on the welder. I'll dig up some scrap and...

Thanks for the reply AK. Like I said, I'm not sure right now where I ended up at. I know I was well above 120, and probably as high as about 180. By the time I was done messing with it, I had turned it up 3 or 4 times, as well as down again. I gave up and ran it with 7014, which did wonderful. I'm n...
