Re: Angle iron miter mig welding
Mitering looks amateurish. As a lifelong woodworker that runs against everything I know, but I'm still learning the rules around here. I used to woodwork some myself (and carpenter work..hence my screen name) and mitering is customary in that profession but in metal, the idea is usually to make som...

Re: Ok, it's welded and twisted. Now what?
All, I pretty much did all of the above. I used the bumper on my 1990 F350 as a fulcrum point and got a 2x4 to untwist the good one. The bad one I straightened using a hydraulic car jack to position the piece, clamped the other two dimensions and welded it up. Then I peened the crap out of it with a...

Ok, it's welded and twisted. Now what?
I am in the process of making some track stands for my bandsaw wood mill. I am making some really simple box frames out of 2x2 16ga square tube. Because I want the tracks to sit on top of the frames with full support, I made the top and bottom "ladder" frames first. Now that they are ready...

Re: What is the right sized Torch Cable Cover?
Ok, strapworks.com has 2" for 60¢ a foot. This is measured across the flat, so if you cut it and laid it out, it would be 6 1/4" or so.

Look up flat tubular webbing. REI has 1" for 36¢ a foot.

Re: Pulse Settings for some Simple brackets
Jody,
Why are you doing the initial touch? Is that something the welder needs to see? In some of the shots, a small spark occurs. Is that normal for an inverter?

On a mill with a milling cutter, you are looking for dark blue chips shaped like a 9. That's right at the point of the mill/tool's capabilities.

Re: Drill press operation (hope this is in the right spot)
When you hit the sweet combination of speed and feed, the chips will come out as a long spiral on most materials. Iron comes out as short curls. If you aren't getting a spiral, you have start with drill speed. Bigger bits have to turn slower or they don't cut. You just soften the tip. If the speed s...

Re: Why thick jumper cable is used for welding?
That thin wire you see is probably just the primary (mains side). It is carrying voltage, not amperage. The cable side is doing the exact opposite so it must be thicker.

Re: I have some beginner questions
What I do is pinch the wire between my index and middle finger. I use the v of my hand to support the wire. Curl your fingers in like you are making a loose fist. Clamp the wire between your fingers. Now, slowly make a gun out of your hand. The wire should get pulled by your fingers. Loosen the grip...

I'm not familiar with this particular model, but it is possible to control a transformer machine with a magnetic amplifier. Lots of higher power stuff uses them.
