Re: Tig welding aluminum questions......

jody does a great video showing the process of lifting the torch slighly as you dab, other than that, as the guys said: arc length too long, and torch angle. you've got to bear in mind that aluminium is far easier to weld when hot, so if your on a foot pedal, you really should be backing off the am...

Re: Tig welding aluminum questions......

Thanks Bill. I will try what you suggest. The piece I am welding on is a 5" x 10" x 1/4" plate on the bottom and the top piece is a 1" x1" x 1/8" angle. Below the bottom piece I have a 4 x 5 inch piece of aluminum plate clamped in a vise. The weldment pieces are clamped...

Re: Tig welding aluminum questions......

Thanks for the suggestion regarding torch angle guys. That may well be one of the problems. I seem to start off OK, but when the puddle gets larger I lose track of where the electrode is actually pointed at. This is most likely resulting (or a result of I should say) of the torch angle sloping back ...

Tig welding aluminum questions......

Hey there all, Several weeks ago I posted for the first time on this forum and was (and still am) having trouble getting a good looking bead, and just joining two pieces of aluminum together. My equipment: Dynasty 200DX Argon gas #20 torch and Coolmate 3 cooler 3/32 Lanthanated Tungsten using 3/32 5...

Re: Hello from Houston TX

Hey, Our everyday house voltage is single phase 10 amp 240 volt. Single phase welders usually have 15 amp plugs which have a larger earth pin. Industrial three phase stuff starts at 20 amps 414 v and goes up to big 63 amp 500v Cast alum plugs for big ass welders. Mick Thanks for your reply Mick. Th...

Re: Hello from Houston TX

What part of Houston are you in? I'm in the Humble area. If you are close enough maybe I. Could help. I'm just learning too, but I haven't had too much problem with my aluminum welds. TxBigRed........ I live about 1 mile west of Reliant Stadium just inside South Loop 610. So that is a ways from the...

Re: Hello from Houston TX

Move this post to the proper place if you want Mick.
I realize this is not the proper place to hold a discussion regarding welding problems.
I just introduced myself and the post grew from there.
Thank you,
Perry

Re: Hello from Houston TX

hey, bung your cleaning action higher, and make sure to give your parts a good wire brush with a dedicated stainless steel wire brush. You haven't accidentally got some annodised alum,? that will give you the fits if you are not used to it. Or even some magnesium, that will fall apart if you try to...

Re: Hello from Houston TX

Welcome to "The Hood" Perry. Nothing beats seat time for learning tig. Grab some aluminum and work with that. Master aluminum and carbon and stainless will be a snap. A steady hand makes for a better looking bead so don't be afraid to prop. Oh, and, get a tig finger! ( shameless plug ) I ...

Re: Hello from Houston TX

Welcome, and post some pictures of your welds. Alot of good experience on this forum to help you out. But from my experience, sight unseen, I'd say wrong torch angle and too long of an arc length. dsmabe, As for posting a pic of my welding, that would be an embarrassment indeed! But I will try to g...

Hello from Houston TX

I have been following the videos and gathering information for some time on this website. I have welded using a Mig machine for a number of years now, but last year I bought myself a Miller Dynasty 200DX machine and I am trying to learn to Tig weld decently. So far I have failed to accomplish much,...
