Re: Help buying machine today

Can it? Sure. Wont get much penetration, but it can melt 2 pieces of 1/2 inch steel together, maybe 1/8" deep, if your lucky. Definately wanna try for some bigger rod if your gonna be doin that thick a metal. Should be able to run 5/32 on that machine, not sure about 3/16.

Re: Work In Phoenix (entry level?)

Dont ever clean anything with brake cleaner before welding. It will create phosgen gas, and it will kill you. Dont ever weld or cut on a tank that ever contained anything flammable unless it is backpurged. It will explode and kill you. Learn the proper ways to handle Compressed Gas Cylinders (CGC's,...

Best in the business. Im sure you could go ask for the class list they have at the JATC, and most of their classes are free to journeyman, and apprentices.

Re: Work In Phoenix (entry level?)

If your just trying to "find some work" while your goin to school, call the union back up and see if their taking any pre-apprentices/helpers. Itll be a good way to get your foot in the door down there, and hell, if your a pre-apprentice you might just be able to shmooze your way into the ...

Re: Work In Phoenix (entry level?)

To qualify as a "welder" i.e. prequal, you have to pass a 2g/5g combo test, open root stick. 6010 root/7018 fill/cap. Half the pipe is welded horizontal, then its moved and the other half is welded vertical. Check out that cert page I linked a few posts up. If you need help deciphering it,...

Re: Work In Phoenix (entry level?)

pay in phoenix is 33 an hour + full bene's, tucson is 28 full benes. Better practice that 6g too brotha. To get your welder on yuor book you need to pass a test, a 6 inch pipe coupon half 2g half 5g. All the rest of ours are 6g as far as I know. If your lookin at welding plate, try the iron workers ...

The Union has a bunch of work in phoenix for pipe fitters/ welders. Intel has a fab goin up and theres a water treatment plant in Tucson. Non-union, not a whole lot of work west of the rockies right now. East coast is boomin though, just pay usually aint all that great.

I did some carbon steel welding today and I was wondering why my welds look so dark silverish almost like a graphite haze over it. Im thinking its mostly silicon/slagg so I used a wirebrush to clean it and it does look a bit better but not nice and neat like some of the bright steel welds Ive seen....

Almost sounds like your not gettin a good ground. Make sure the piece your grounding to is clean and shiny and solidly attached to the piece your welding too. Failing that it could very well be the gas. Get alot of people on the forums that have problems with their arc and it turns out to be a bad t...
