I was havin this issue. I think it's because as I stopped I was pulling the rod straight away from the weld (long arcing). I started ending by running gently up the bevel and it fixed the problem.

I think rake is on it. I was on 3G a couple of weeks ago. The first rod would go in like butter and the second rod is when the arc would get crazy on me. Teacher wasn't sure. I read up a bit and think the plate got magnetized.

Thanks fellas. Of course we didn't have class last night so I get to wait till Monday to try out the info ( the teacher chipped slag without glasses and you can guess the outcome ). But the help is appreciated.
