Re: Welding schools in AZ???

I'm from Arizona, I learned to weld through the pipefitters union UA Local 469. I really don't know of any welding schools in Arizona. There is a community college in Tucson that has a welding program but I don't know if it's any good. It's through Pima Community College. If your friends brother is ...

Re: apprenticeship path

Otto - sounds fascinating. Just out of curiosity, what was your career path like for you to end up where you are? I'm always interested in how people come to be doing what they're doing. Wow, what a question... High-school was math/science, advanced and gifted programs. Hated it. After graduation, ...

Re: apprenticeship path

Last week I went into the UA training center and applied for an apprenticeship position. I don't feel like the interview went that well, but we'll see if I get a call. I'm at the point now where I think I'm just going to have to get a machine, try and find a mentor, and start going after it on my o...

Re: apprenticeship path

Hello all - I'm new to welding, having done some brazing and some stick and tig in a community education class. I enjoyed it and would like to get certified and get an apprenticeship, preferably as a boilermaker. I have an interest in working in a shipyard. What's the best way to go about this? The...

Re: apprenticeship path

BIG "plus one" on everything Arno said! I took the hardest route you can imagine, because I never saw myself as a welder. I'm almost completely self-taught. I did a four-year BS gig in industrial electronics. I've worked 30 jobs in eight entirely different fields. Yet it was welding I alw...

Re: Union or independent?

I appreciate the reply like you said I've never gotten a clear cut answer and I'm starting to see I'm not going to get one I'm just going to have to find out for myself! And I am also glad I found my career path early on I've known for 2 years now that I wanted to be a welder just because its somet...

Re: Question about removing magnetism from pipe before weldi

The work is being done in a large graded dirt lot adjacent to a coal / natural gas power plant. The pipe is transported with a fork lift and faced with an electric facing tool then set up on jack stands that run a long distance. The piping seems to become magnetized after sitting on the jack stands...

Ok so I'm having a serious issue at work, the pipe I'm welding on is becoming magnetized and I have no idea why. What I need to know is how to remove the magnetism from the pipe so I can weld it....? Our quality control people have tried running a de-magnetizer over it to no success. We coiled the ...

Re: Question about removing magnetism from pipe before weldi

Is it possible to run on AC current? Thats an old trick to negate the effects of magnetization. Also, be sure you put your ground as close as reasonably possible to the joint your welding. Well yes, It's a tig root and hot pass (er90s), then stick (9018) fill and cap. I put the ground maybe a foot ...

Re: The most beautiful weld I have ever seen.

The coloring is what happens naturally and actually indicates to much heat input and/or lack of shielding gas while the SS is above its reactive temperature. The "cross stitch" pattern you are looking at is actually a technique called "walking the cup". This technique is one you...

Just to confuse you, I'll say the Speedglas9002x or 9100 fx. They are the two largest varients in the respective models. My choice.
