Re: First TIG welds

From everything I seen you really need to sit down with a larger piece of steel and do the steel drill and pad beads. Things you need to concentrate on is arc length, torch angle , travel speed and consistency. You need to run longer beads to learn muscle memory and hand eye coordination keeping a t...

Re: scotch briteing tungsten?

Think you guys are way over thinking this pvc vs abs thing. Next you are all gonna be making stainless steel or titanium tig rod holders. One of the most reactive filler rods that will oxidize in storage that some of you will never use is magnesium. I store magnesium rods in pvc. This pic is of a tu...

Re: How unweldable is unweldable alu?

It's pretty common practice to weld fittings on aluminum oil pans and valve covers for oil recovery for the dry sump. Never had one break or crack smashed the hell out of couple on oil pan when motor came loose flipping.

Well if the welding doesn't work out you got practice to perform in a different field of work

Glad it worked out for you. Yeah the Polaris castings are pretty nice to weld on. I don't hardly ever use pulse functions on my machine. If I do use it, it's typically on stainless steel.

@RamboBaby since this thread got way off, have you started welding on transmission yet. Let us know if you encounter problems. Don't be afraid to grind off some of your first passes when You start the build up. If you think you have porosity. It typically happens in the first pass on the cast. Just ...

Re: Polaris Aluminum Transmission Housing

I weld on a lot of Polaris engine blocks, transmissions and rear ends. For filler I use the 4043 and 4943 these work great on the Polaris stuff. I have been phasing out my 4043 and using more of the 4943. I especially been using 4943 for mounts or areas that need a lot of build up do to 4943 not nee...

Re: Old Airco TiG/Stick welder weird on Alu/TIG

Hey Sam this is from my first post ;) Square wave goes from a full positive to full negative with very little ramping. Its typically drawn straight down but there is some time that passes as it moves from negative to positive. And while not a true sine wave easiest way to describe it since he didn't...

Re: Old Airco TiG/Stick welder weird on Alu/TIG

You serious? I use my Airco (miller 330 abp) on aluminum - does a great job :D It will even weld pop cans together. I addressed that because when I first read post I thought he was converting some old stick welder to do AC TIG. Converting say a tombstone for instance to do aluminium is like shootin...

I should add I thought you where modding a welder that never had a.c. or high frequency. I have no experience with airco welders as for what they came with originally.

Re: Old Airco TiG/Stick welder weird on Alu/TIG

I seriously doubt you will ever get good results trying to weld aluminum on a.c. with it. The biggest reason I see is getting a true square sine wave. You need to have it jump from positive to negative almost instantly. A regular a.c. volt sine wave is curved as it ramps up and ramps down. Square wa...

Re: Difficult Tig Brazing - Steel Wire to 1/4" square bar

No need to braze it in or use filler. Just use the rod itself like filler. puddle the base metal shove your 1/16 rod in puddle like using it as filler. Leave rod in puddle as you taper out. Then trim rod to desired length.

At some point I too would like to try 4093 but the only stuff I found was a 10# lot. That would last me a very long time and would be and expensive experiment at $85.00. It is really worth it to buy filler in 10lbs lots and with 4943 it is well worth it. It does everything 4043 does plus some. Buy ...

Re: TIG Welding thin aluminum .040"

Practice Welding aluminium cans together. Is great practice and material is easily found. Things go south on a can real quick so after you weld a few together it will make that cover seam like you are welding .125 instead of .040

I hope you are using a pedal will make life a lot easier.

I think you are confusing that with the Chinese built TA 186 which is a totally different machine to the Japanese built TA185 Sanrex machine. The Japanese TA machines are fantastic. I own an LM300 and just had a really nice arc to it. The 186 had and may still have a known issue with the pedal. The...

There is no one quick answer for the flow for every need you might encouter with this. I fillet weld and outside corner will not get same coverage at same flow rate. I uses this lens with the pyrex and alumina cup. My flow rates can range from 12 to 25 depending on stick out and joint configuration....

If you have a lot of spatter on the screen it is impossible to get it out, but you can remove a couple of screens before you notice any major change in shielding. Personally I would remove the first screen and use it. If it gets full of spatter toss it and replace. I charge for gas lens replacement ...

. Any advice on where to start with pulse settings? That was 3/4" black pipe I welded. I wouldn't even worry about pulsing yet, learn to do it without pulse it takes practice. Watch all of Jody's TIG videos and get seat time it will come as your technique gets better and faster. Currently you ...
