At the risk of thread drift; it sure was fun watching Mr. " I can weld as good as you" (my boss) mild steel with the machine set for Alum. I said nothing.

Re: New to tigging
Totally doable. You're on the right track. Just try to get it as clean as you can inside and out. Inside is nearly impossible. The paint is your biggest issue; get's into every small crevass. Many boats are made with 5000 series Alu.

Re: New to tigging
Boats are dirty as Sin; mud, gas, oil, paint, you name it it's on there. You are right it is weldable, but to get it clean enough will be the trick. Transoms have wood in them, and are a real bitch to weld because of the smoke, and possibly water vapor when you light up. I can't tell where you're tr...

If it were me, I'd say turn your gas down to about 15, amps up to 125, balance to 60-70% penetration, but I'm no expert.

There is a small Oring on the back cap that tightens the Collet; I've had that suck o2 at that point. Caused all kinds of grief.

Re: Splitting tungsten on AC
I ran an 1/8" all day on AC today with no splitting; switched to 3/32 at the end of the day, no splits. Running @250 amps floored on the 1/8th and 175 floored on the 3/32. The difference from my earlier experience is the grind. When I first started using 2% Lanth, I was grinding to a pencil poi...

Re: Splitting tungsten on AC
Same here. At 150+ splitting on the 3/32, but as long as I'm under 150 amps I can weld all day. Got some 1/8 in. but haven't used them yet. I will say that I'm using a Syncro 250 and weld Alum. mostly. Settings on the penetration side,9, post flow @10 seconds. Don't get to weld much steel, but turn ...

My boss differentiates between steel and Alum. by asking if it's "Metal or Aluminum" > I've been letting him know that they are both in the same family; I shit you not.

Look up "hydro forming" on the tubes. Actually some cool stuff being done with a pressure washer. :D Yep, it passed. 1.5 X MAWP. I wasn't directly involved in the data logging, so I'm not sure if the requirement was 10 minutes (likely), but the pressure-washer was stunningly efficient. Ste...

I don't get to weld every day and when I do it aint pretty. Algae, paint, corrosion, oil, foam, old glue, and on this one there was Epoxy, body filler added in, then bed liner to hide the crappy repair, but I won!! :D http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c205/mewolf1/IMG_0097.jpg http://i28.photobucket...

I used to have this problem ALL the time. When I found out that stick out was to short and arc length tightened up, things went as they should.

Bathrooms aren't hard. I re-plumbed and re-fitted ours while my husband was away, so it would be all done when he got home. Kept the overall cost way down too. It came out very well. She right of course, and so are you, but I remodeled for about six years and am not looking forward to it, besides ,...

Snagged my girl because she was a welder, thought," she can't be all bad." Guess they made here an inspector by the time we started seeing each other and now works in the offices. Been trying to get her fired up about welding so she will go in half on a machine; she says we need a bathroom...
