From what I've heard, a lot has changed in the past few years.
I hadn't heard that yet.

Re: Open Root Tig
I was running around 115 with 1/8 gap and filler. 3/32 tungsten.
Make sure you aren't weaving too wide. For me, I don't let the tungsten point go past the inner edge of the bevel.
Also slightly force the filler in. Go easy though.

In the latest welding journal, I saw these http://www.galgage.com/measuring_gap-a-let.html (maybe not same brand, but same function)
Do they actually work well?

What phase are you in? I'm in 7.
Not any others that I've seen so far.

Re: Failed tests
I broke my first ever bend. Was done for fun.
Single bevel 2g, mig root, dual shield fill and cap.
Cap was good, root cracked. Was a little speck of something in there.
Didn't do any grinding during, just wire wheeled the flux off.

Chassis cabs are odd creatures when it comes to beds.
Frame rails and rear axle is narrower than normal pickups. Makes it harder to just pick one up.
Luckily got one for mine for $400. A little beat here and there, but it does it's job.

Wasn't something like this just posted? Yesterday I think.
It's interesting. A lot were saying Tig was very common even in the older days.
Field work will still be more SMAW. Think of the elements.

I think it was on oil burners.
Basically that the mounting can be a problem, as the bed is more rigid than the truck frame.

Oh, definitely. Lol
Think the truck will be taking any flexing at all?
Just something I had seen brought up on another forum when building a flatbed like that.
