Re: HELP WITH AMAZING TIG ROOT (WALK THE CUP)
I'm sure it was walked, the cap is walked for definite, I didn't take photos of the cap because it was wire brushed with a steel brush so it's got specs of rust on it. how has he/she got the protrusion on the root? I've tried small and big gaps, high and low amps. I can get the ripple affect by walk...

hi all been a while since my last post, been super busy. anyway i was removing some pipework from site today and came across a 8" - 6" reducing piece that was no longer needed. i new the welding was good because it was on a caustic acid job, anyway cut a long story short, i was amazed by t...

I was modifying some pipe work another company had done it was schedule 10s stainless steel. I wasn't allowed to take photos but the closest I could was this photo on google http://www.tiptig-international.com/sspipingprint.html It's the second row down, third one across. I know this is that tip tig...

Re: stainless steel butt welds (photos)
My boss is an alright guy, it's just I want to push my skills to the limit. There's only two welders at the company my mentor and me, before I was an apprentice there was only one welder. My mentor can't walk the cup so I have to learn from youtube videos. Ever since I passed my codes in tig he's no...

Re: stainless steel butt welds (photos)
I have seen guys walk the cup on 1/2 inch pipe and it looks good but sometimes you can see a lump in the tie ins, I'll try and get some photos of some. I don't do much cup walking, 90% of the work I do is schedule 10, plus If my boss sees me practicing on plate or pipe he don't like it even though I...

Re: stainless steel butt welds (photos)
Purge set up was 15-20 cfh these pipes were quite long, I allowed it to purge for about 3 minutes. I didn't walk the cup because I'm not confident enough to do so, I didn't want to slip and create an oxidised area. Plus to be honest I wouldn't practice to walk the cup on schedule 10 pipe and risk bl...

hi guys just a quick upload of some of the work ive done. i wanted to take more pictures but halfway through my boss told me it was a rush job so only a few pics. these were welded more or less in the 6g position (it was an aprox 45 angle, you might notice the cap is in a different direction to the ...

E6013 for pipe codings????
I'm an apprentice and I have passed two codings. I need to pass for my apprentice scheme full tig which I have passed. I also need a tig root with a stick fill and cap. My boss says I need to use e6013 for the test, but I've never heard of a test using e6013. Apparently all pipe welds on carbon stee...

Horizontal stick welding, cap runs
Hi guys, I'm using 7018 low hydrogen electrodes, I can't seem to run the first bead on the cap, it runs ok but when I chip the slag of it looks like it has cold lap on the bottom, like a lip on the bottom toe. I run horizontal between 115-120 amps. The runs on top look we'll fused its just the first...

Thanks for the great comments guys, much appreciated. I'm a apprentice at the minute, I've been welding pipe for around 8-9 months, I'm in my second year at the moment. The face welds on the flanges were made with the aid of the tig finger, so thank you jody. I used a large bore gas lens for the fac...

Re: Wandering Arc on Stainless
Hi, Wondering arc on stainless steel is a pain especially on thin material. Try a really fine point on the tungsten with no contaminates on it. Even try a 1/16 tungsten. Use just enough amps as it takes to just form a good size puddle on the thicker material and add filler (1.6mm) then wash the pool...

Stick and tig welding inside and round corners
Ive always looked up to jody and his welding and thought of him almost as a welding Yoda, we all appreciate the videos he supply's us with, just a quick ask though. It would be interesting to see stick and tig welding inside corners like on angle iron and channel. I've done a little tiging and stick...

Re: I have a question to all you pipe welders out there.
I've heard of people using wire from mig machines with fine delicate work, but for your job, 1.6 mm if fine. As its carbon steel cup size isn't that important any size from 5-9 cup would be perfect if you have a gas lens that would be a bonus, but its not necessary. Just remember with thinner materi...

Re: I have a question to all you pipe welders out there.
If you have a 1/16 electrode then use that, the arc cone will be smaller and give more control on thinner material. It can be done with a 2.4mm electrode and give pretty much identical results its just skill of the operator, as you mentioned this is your first pipe weld. Just take it steady, use low...

Re: Tig welding, through the pipe technique
Thanks for the advice guys
I've tried the technique with mixed outcomes, do I aim the filler into the arc or pool and how do you build metal on the inside of the pipe when welding overhead.
But I can't seem to find a balance on the surface tension with the filler rod and it wond build on the inside.

Re: I have a question to all you pipe welders out there.
Hi, You can Use 309 stainless steel wire but because its a exhaust manifold it will be constantly doing hear cycles of heating and cooling, as stainless has a different coefficient of linier expansion, the welds hold for a while but probably will crack along the toes of the weld. I've done weld repa...
