Don't overthink the work... ;)

Yep. 7018 is going to give a nice appearance and if done right, will last longer than youll be using that firewood rack.

Re: 6010 beads

I dunno anything about dunking rods in water man sorry. And i havent burned Hobarts before. My lws sells Lincoln and Weldcote. I have a 10lb box of the weldcote 6010 and a 7018 but havent tried them yet... I wouldnt put so much emphasis on arc control and dig. Especially for running beads... Either ...

6010 beads

I told mbmalone that id try to run some 6010 next time i welded. Well...yesterday was that day. School has been out for a little and i havent had a chance to burn some rods so i started with 6010 beads. 1/8 rod, 80-90 amps, flat position. I had an old piece laying around that i used to practice T jo...

Re: vertical 7018

Yea it served its purpose as good practice.

I dont have alot of experience with big weaves like AK's and its nice to get to see some done right. They come out looking great. Maybe ill try some of those out next time too.

Re: vertical 7018

I practiced on some real thin plate yesterday with 3/32 7018. From 90 to 95 amps. I'm putting these up even though i dont even consider myself in the same league as most of you guys...AK and Jasper and MANY others. Im on summer break from school and I was dying to light up and melt some metal. Could...

Re: first few beads

Ive never used 6011 but im guessing its very similar to 6010 from what ive heard and read. When i weld with 3/32 6010, 95 amps is too hot for that rod. Once you lowered to 75 they started looking real nice. First welds in over 20 years huh? Looks like you already got the hang of it again and you're ...

Re: learning a lot quickly

The welds look great. I hope to be a pipe welder one day and yours look just as good as many ive seen on jobs. I agree with otto though. Filing is sometimes a big no no, and other times its acceptable. If my welds looked as good as yours id throw that file away when it comes to your cover pass. You'...

Wow. I think a few of those rods tacked together could be used for the structural steel in a manhattan high rise. Sorry iron workers... looks like youre out of a job haha.

My jaw almost hit the floor when i saw this thing. Very cool

Looks a lot better. You had some nice ones in there and it looks like you slowed down. Youre making good progress keep it up
Stay as consistent as possible and watch that puddle. You stayed a lot straighter too.
Try some fillets or laps with 6010

Re: How to hold a tight Arc, without Arc Control or Fine Tun

You look like your amps were fine. Just gotta work on manipulating that puddle. Also, my machine couldve welded completely different from yours even if we were set to the same number. Theyre all a little unique in their own way. Dont be so concerned about the specific number. U got it running and do...

Re: How to hold a tight Arc, without Arc Control or Fine Tun

Not too bad at all. My first thought is that you should slow down a little. Notice how your ripples are shaped like: < They should be more like this: ( Id slow down a little and watch the back of the puddle. That will tell you how your beads are going to look. If you cant go slower with a straight d...

Try and separate the lincoln rods from the hobarts. That should give ya a good idea if the rods are causing an issue

Anybody who laughs at a man trying to better himself isnt worth listening to anyway... Watch that puddle! Also... Watch Jody's 6010 video where hes padding beads til the cows come home. If ya already saw it, well watch it again. It cant hurt. Maybe watching the Jedi Master will bring out your inner ...

Re: How to hold a tight Arc, without Arc Control or Fine Tun

AK is right. Not all rods are created equal. Cheap machine + low to mid range rods = problems... break loose and get some 5p or 5p+ from Lincoln. You will be amazed. The 5p+ has been engineered to be a more user friendly 6010. Try it out. Buy the 1/8 and give it a go. And post pics of your welds not...

I didn't mean to hijack your thread... just wanna let ya know that it is possible to run 6010 with that machine, and without a lot of spatter. Take some pics of what your 6010 beads are looking like and im sure these guys can help you out

Re: How to hold a tight Arc, without Arc Control or Fine Tun

here's some more ac/dc tombstone shots. practice 6010 flat and try to get that down first. I never got great results out of position, but then again this was my first machine and im obviously not someone who has been welding for 30 years. I'm sure otto or some of these other guys could make 6010 loo...

here are some pics of 6010 and 7018 with the tombstone. KEEP IN MIND I WAS VERY NEW TO WELDING WHEN I TOOK THESE HAHA...probably about 2 months in... I had a welder on my job who was willing to share his time and knowledge with me and he helped to get me started. im still a beginner but I don't even...

Re: How to hold a tight Arc, without Arc Control or Fine Tun

My first machine was a Lincoln Tombstone AC/DC and it was all i had for months. I was having good results with the 3/32 7018 but the 1/8 6010 would only run decent in the flat position. I used the 85 amp setting and the 90 amp setting for 6010, sometimes even 95 amps... and any lower and it would st...
