Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
I worked at finishing a desktop wire model of a Grumman Gulfstreamer G-550. It's going to one of my corporate customers. It's been a while since I posted anything on this forum so I thought I'd better let everyone know that I'm still alive and kickin...

...So, here you are (on WT&T forum) with a very good product for all. This is going to go over good for you Jonathan and I'm happy for you. You do a lot of good for the welding community, and I speak for me personally.

I like that a lot!! Can't say I have seen one like that before. In the right applications it should work just fine. This might be another idea to "borrow" ;) -Jonathan I still need to put some Aluminum Bronze on the ends of all the 'feet' for conductivity, then she will be ready for a nam...

Thanks for all of your kind comments, I've got a couple more ideas for this 'hold down' thing. I'll make them then share them.

Third hand goodies
image.jpg Yesterday, I made 3 - third hand tools. I have not had much experience welding Aluminum, so I watched some of Jody's videos and got in some 'seat time' today. One of the third hands was made using 'Allen' wrenches. Kind of goofy but it's different. I call him "Allen". So today I...

Re: Welding wire desktop aircraft sculpture
image.jpg I have tons of little scraps laying around especially pieces of welding rod and I refuse to throw it out because you never know when you will need them. A lot of times I will play around with the pieces of scrap to just fine tune settings. Looks good by the way. :) Here is a bunch of piec...

Welding wire desktop aircraft sculpture
My current project is a B747-8 aircraft model. Just started and have a few hours left until completion. Note in the photos, I'm using a "Tig Finger". The slab of steel I use to keep things straight gets too hot to touch...not anymore.

Re: Tig welding anodized aluminum
You can use a 180 amp machine for thin anodized but you will suffer for it in time and patience. A 250 amp is actually minimal for sched 40 pipe and 1/4" flat stock. The thing about anodized is, most welds are required of a certain aesthetic quality, so it's the starts and stops that become mo...

Re: Tig welding anodized aluminum
I would wait for Tamjeff's input as I hardly ever have anodized in my place to do - but essentially depending on the thickness & nature or the anodizing you require probably 50% > 100 % more amps than you would expect for the thickness - you then either use the pedal or torch switch to apply th...

Re: Lanthanated vs. pure tungsten
I've used pure for over 25 years and it just never occurred to me to try anything else. I have some Lanth at the shop though. I may revisit it and see what all the excitement is about. I remember trying it when we got the Dynasty, but then it lost favor because of the grinding step, which was one o...

Re: Lanthanated vs. pure tungsten
Which type of electrode is easiest and best to use on Aluminum, pure tungsten or lanthanated? Really that question is realitive. It all depends on which way you look at this. I wouldn't say one is really easier than the other because pure will ball up requiring sharpening if you need a crisp arc. L...

Re: Tig welding anodized aluminum
I'm fairly sure Jody did a video on this a while back - Wyatt did for sure - worth having a look on You Tube -( but it did'nt come out like TamJeff's for sure ! ) - depending on thickness 180ammps is on the low side as it needs fast " blasts " of high amps usually to weld. What do I do to...

Re: Tig welding anodized aluminum
What machine do you have? Do you have a on/off remote? You can weld through the coating using high amps and the so called "bump" method. Takes some practice to get right I've only tried this a few times... You'll need 53xx series filler. I've done this with a Syncro 350 but a inverter sty...
