Re: Regulator Repair
I rebuilt a regulator after I googled for parts, using the search string "{make} {model} regulator rebuild kit". What's your make and model? It *can* be fairly intuitive, to some extent just a matter of replacing new parts for old. It can be a little tricky getting the regulator apart: min...

Welcome, Katzenklo! I wonder if your friend is referring to gas ionization. This is a clip from the Miller TIG Handbook: The oxide can be removed by the welding arc during the welding process when direct current electrode positive is used. The positively charged gas ions which were flowing from the ...

Re: Hobart flux cor wire
Could this be a polarity problem? FCAW is generally electrode negative, while GMAW is electrode positive. Machines vary in how they handle this: some have positive and negative ports on the front of the machine that allow you to jack the leads in as needed. Other machines have polarity switches or s...

Re: Why does the Puddle blow out while TIG welding?
Welcome, Carsten! I recently had the experience of TIG welding on steel tube that was coated with zinc rustproofing inside and out. Although I cleaned the exterior to bright shiny steel, the zinc on the interior of the tube corrupted the weld and would boil out of the weld while cooling, creating po...

Re: How to run a 220v stick welder at home?
You have a couple options, depending on the layout of the house. I use the 220v 30 amp outlet for the electric dryer. Another option is your kitchen's range, if it's electric. That's 220v, usually 50 amps. If either of these is near a window you may be able to run it outside the house to a work area...

Re: HELP!!!
Some more clues, please: you said 'the machine worked on 220' until you used the plasma. The TIG welder worked on 220 until you tried the plasma, then both the plasma and the welder were down, then the welder worked on 110. Is that correct?
Can you TIG on 110 to get some of those orders out?

I've seen others talk about this, and the most commonly accepted idea is exactly what you've mentioned: dress "nice" but not "up", clean and well kept. If it's a big company then you might check out their website or Facebook page to see what they're proud of, and be able to talk ...

I was thinking "cold" too. Is the weld metal clean, no mill scale, paint or rust? Or maybe... have you applied the techniques featured here: http://welding-tv.com/2014/08/13/mig-welding-basics-part-3/ ... starting with measuring 6 seconds worth of wire? The starting point wirefeed speed fo...

I found a little information, here:

"1/8” and 5/32” diameters can be used out-of-position using reduced amperage, building a series of horizontal beads on a “shelf,” and by using a weave technique."

Re: Polarity
Generally speaking, in an electric circuit power flows from negative to positive. In an EN scenario electricity flows from the torch to the weld metal, and opposite for EP. Heat concentrates on the positive end of that exchange, which is why TIG DCEN on steel gives good penetration. TIG DCEP is do-a...

A suggestion for a future TIG overview video, and possibly a future MIG Basics video too: a discussion on how to set shielding gas flow rate would dovetail nicely with the how-to theme.
Thanks for another great video!

Re: Brand new welder looking for advice
16 gauge will be tricky to learn on. Do you have anything thicker, that you can run longer beads on? Even if you clean the paint off a chunk of old bedframe you'll have an easier time learning on thicker material. Rather than welding a joint, just run some beads on the metal. You can run "strin...

Re: Small crack in aluminium oilpan
Had to stare at this a while to figure it out, but i think i got it now. The point of TamJeff's repair is that it's easier to weld the 11 guage repair material to the porous oily cast pan than it is to repair the crack in the porous oily cast pan, because the crack has affected the threads which wil...

I found manuals for similar models, here: http://www.iwestore.com/index.php/resources/manuals Your specific machine is not shown, but the manual for the 180Y seems close. There's a chart for how to set voltage, current, and inductance for various thicknesses of metal. Coldman's post below references...

Could you chuck them into a drill, and remove some of the OD with sandpaper? This idea might work for you, Anders, if you don't have a lathe. Would there be a concern with losing structural or electrical integrity?GlenC wrote:...I can turn them down a bit
