High frequency start

Alpha-Tig 201XD; should there be an arc between the HF "points" all the while you're welding or just during start up please?

Re: Weird issue with aluminum welding.

I'd like to jump in here if I can because this sounds just like a problem I'm having with a AHP Alpha-Tig 201 XD. Bought this because I wanted to try pulse and my Miller doesn't have that feature. I've only used it maybe 4 times and it was working well until the HF start acting up and there was no c...

I'm going to pull the cover off the machine and check the gas line although I can hear and feel gas coming out so...

Could it be an electronic screw up?

Re: Tungsten balled on me

Thanks guys! No AC by accident. This machine sputters and fusses plenty enough when set wrong to wake up the soundest sleeper. I'm sure everything was clean as I did the same procedure as I do for aluminum. Even wiped the filler rod with acetone. I'll try 1/8" tungsten & see how that works....

Tungsten balled on me

I've had a 180 Diversion for several years now and just experienced this the other day. I had the machine up around 170 on 3/16" bright cleaned mild steel. 3/32 2% lanthanated, 8 cup, gas lens, 15-20 cfh. Got about an inch welded and saw the tip balled. Happened 2 or 3 times. All the parameters...

Baileigh pan and box brake

I'm looking for a 24" pan and box brake and I noticed that Baileigh has a 24 inch they claim will bend 16 ga.
Anyone have experience with this bender?

Just missed a Pexto.

Re: Cup isolator material

@ Greybeard - both PEEK (polyetheretherkeotone) and PTFE (polytetraflouroethylene) are used as thermoplastic-based isolators for TIG torches. In the two graphs below, PEEK is the upper bar while PTFE is the lower bar for a given Thermal Property or Mechanical Property. We've used both materials for...

Re: Cup isolator material

Some one is trying to make their own cup, I see! Let's see pics!! I'm a machinist as well as a welder. The machining time to make an insulator-much cheaper to buy one. Just my opinion. Maybe he's bored and wants to play with a lathe.http://forum.weldingtipsandtricks.com/posting.php?mode=quote...

.125" 6061 cleaned & brushed, 3/32" filler, T joint, amps were up there but forget precise setting, working the pedal anyway.
20 CFH.
Miller 180, stubby gas lens, 3/32 2% lanthanated.

When attempting lay wire technique the filler just melts and runs away from the puddle.

Would anyone know what the material is that the white cup isolators are made of?
Some sort of plastic.

Safe position of plasma cutter

I just bought a new Hypertherm Powermax 45 and, like any parent of a new-born, I'm having fits deciding where to store it! I've got room on the lower shelf of my TIG cart, about 6" off the floor...you guys see any problem storing it there? Yeah, I know I'm nuts but I still have to live with it....

Re: Certiflat vs. Fixturepoint tables

I ended up with the Fixturepoint table.
Already have a "beatin' on" table, just needed the fixturing feature.
Works a treat.

Besides, Jody has one and who am I to second guess? ;)

Re: Certiflat vs. Fixturepoint tables

C'mon! I thought all welders were wealthy! My intention is to get just the table as I can machine all the fixture components. I'm just wondering if all the stability of the Certiflat is greater than the Fixturepoint what with all the ribbing they designed in. Can't seem to find a shot of the u...

Has anyone purchased the Certiflat U weld fixture table on eBay?

Wondering how it compares to the Stronghand Fixturepoint table.

Hello from CT

Recently retired at 66, now pursuing the interests I should have made a career of! Grew up around farms, welding and machining for play & pay... if it held it was good. Just hobby pursuits now, currently with a Diversion 180 TIG, an old Miller 130 mig and my original love, gas welding with a Smi...

Argon flow meter question

I recently purchased a Smith model 30 flow meter to replace an old flow gauge setup. Though my tank is darn near empty I mounted it for a try anyway and was intrigued and puzzled by its performance. When I hit the pedal it sounded as if I was sand blasting and the ball in the gauge is very unstable!...
