Re: How to set up your stick welder so the slag just peels o

Just agreeing with what the others have said. Tight arc length and consistent travel speed are key.

Re: Help/Advice needed on thin sheetmetal - TIG

A 47k and a 50k are going to be virtually indistinguishable from each other in most cases. As long as the sweep covers the range the machine is expecting, it'll work. One could, in theory, take any control such as the steady-grip and replace the pot with the correct value. There is also the matter o...

Excellent. It seems like it would be a simple matter to build one of their controls
With a different value resistor in it.

Everlast website says it's 47K. Bummer. Maybe they'll introduce one for that model.

I really like my steady grip but don't know if they make one for your machine.

Re: Help/Advice needed on thin sheetmetal - TIG

I would just like to welcome you to the forum and suggest the CK Steady-Grip for amperage control. I too am a paraplegic. The Steady Grip gives me the control I need without so much wobble as regular thumb controls. My welds are much more uniform and I don't stub my tungsten nearly as much. Hope thi...

Re: Spanner on truck chassis

This is the old non-self-adjusting slack adjuster:

All of these I ever worked on take a 9/16" wrench.

This is the more modern self adjusting type:

These typically take a 7/16"

Dead horse well and truly beaten

Re: Spanner on truck chassis

Admittedly my experience was on older trucks (70s thru early 90s) used in construction but the only slack adjusters i saw that didn't take a 9/16 were the self adjusting variety. Things have no doubt moved on since those days.

Re: Spanner on truck chassis

In the U.S. virtually all truck and trailer brake adjusters use a 9/16" wrench. There is a special bolt to cage the air pot that takes a 3/4" but if you're just backing off a trailer to move without air, it's easier to just loosen the adjuster.

Re: Mystery metal

I suspected contamination on the stone was responsible for the sparks so i tried a new flap disk as well as a scotch-brite wheel and got the same sparks. It was just a curiosity to me but even though i got it welded and it's holding, I'm ordering a new bracket. I guess I should go on a diet so I don...

Re: Little baby kegger!

Thanks for the replies. This was a fun little project. The filler neck and end plates are mig welded inside and out. The fittings are tig welded and the two wheel halves also are tigged. In one spot I hit some kind of contaminant and got some ugly porosity which I ground out and rewelded. I pressure...

Re: Mystery metal

Thanks for all the replies. The part feels really light like aluminum. The thing that confuses me is the sparks. I thought it might have been contamination on my stone so I put a new one on and it still threw the orange sparks. It did flow nicely with the 4043 filler and seems so be holding well but...

Mystery metal

I broke the bracket that holds the arm rest on my wheelchair. I thought it was aluminum but it produced faint orange sparks when I ground it out. I used 4043 filler but once a puddle formed, it became so incredibly bright I had to set my helmet shade on maximum. Seemed to weld ok and hasn't broken y...

Little baby kegger!

The fuel tank on my dad's roto-tiller was hopelessly cracked. The obvious solution, make a new one from metal. As soon as the primer and a couple coats of paint are dry, I'll reassemble it. Made entirely from old scrap and a wheel from a three wheel I had in the 80's. image.jpg image.jpg Cheers. -El...
