Metallic baloney

I'm not sure even a blood offering to Hephaestus can help with pot metal but my brother bet me a case of Newcastle I couldn't fix these drawer handles so I accepted the challenge. Initially I thought they were brass but turns out they're painted pot metal. I don't think they are plated because the f...

Re: Saying Hello

Welcome. Good to have you here. I have an old Hobart handler 150 I think it is. The thing just won't die. It's probably 25 years old and still welds great. You should do fine with your machine.

Re: Let's talk helmets, hoods, hats ...whatever you call the

As with most of us, my eyes ain't what they used to be. I've been struggling to see what I'm welding for several years now. I've tried a fixed shade gold lens in my old Huntsman, a cheap auto dark (bah!), a Lincoln Viking and a Miller digital elite. None were giving me the results I wanted. I just p...

AVE, a Canadian chooch meister uses a patereon to fund his videos. I don't like the idea of a continuing payment, I'd rather a one off . But I did buy a ruler from him. Warning: Don't watch his videos unless you like swearing and laughing your ass off. AvE is always good for a chuckle. Doesn't clai...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Made me an adjustable rest to prop my hands on when tig welding. It quickly attaches or detaches from my bench and so far I'm very happy with it. Made entirely from stuff out of my scrap bin except the bolt and nut. I would apologize about the mess, but just like desks a clean workbench is a sign of...

Re: The Rogues' Gallery

Here in sunny Arizona it's more of a dry heat lol, that is until ya spend the day welding new fins in a mixer drum. Definitely get some sweating action going on then. Someday maybe I'll get the chance to visit some of these other states and see what all the fuss is about.

Re: Welding from a wheelchair

My shop is in a constant state of evolution. I'm not sure I'll ever be completely satisfied with it. I love seeing how other folks organize theirs. I'm not quite the polar opposite of a neat freak, so anything that helps keep things neat and organized is of great help to me. When I had my service tr...

Old crusty, rusty, painted metal is a little tricky to get good clean welds on but it gives an inimitable aged look. What do y'all think?

Re: Bucket Welding

I used to do a lot of bucket repairs. First I'd use a pressure washer then an air hammer to beat the crap out of the area and a lot of the dirt would fall out from between layers. Then a nice hot root with 6011 and weld it the rest of the way with 8018. I used NR-211 a few times when at the shop but...

Re: Wheelchair shotgun mount...

It does me good to see people come up with things like this. As a wheelchair user myself, I am always interested in seeing the adaptations and work-arounds that clever people figure out. While I don't compete, I do like going to the range for target practice (if you know off the top of your head how...

Re: Practice project

I've been mostly out of commission the last half year or so. Surgery and rehab and more surgery and more rehab. Then I was in a crash and broke the hell out of a leg. Finally getting on top of things and back into my shop. It's good to be back.
