Re: Aluminum BMW Cylinder Head Repair

I've changed a few but never tried to weld a cracked head. Looks like you've got a tough repair there. Good luck.

I need to be able to wheel my legs under it as I can't reach much beyond the distance of my footrest without losing my balan...

Thanks. I got lucky when I found that old air tank. It's just the right size to make bottle holders. :D

Neat. There's an old hot-rodding axiom which states, "If some is good, then more is better and too much is just right!"

Yet another welder cart.

I know everybody has got one. This is my version made of 95% scrounged materials and a few new bits. :D The link is to an album detailing the project. I'd appreciate hearing what y'all think of it. Thanks. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153324689794951.1073741831.655349950&type=1&am...

Re: LASIK and welding

I asked an optometrist whether I would be a good candidate for LASIK and how it would be for welding. He replied, "Let me put it this way, I don't know any dentists who have had LASIK." I guess that answers my question.

Busted! I have leather apron, boot covers and the works. Old habits die hard. I was making a couple quick tacks and neglected to grab all my safety stuff. One would think I'd learn eventually...

Finally, the honeymoon begins!

Greetings everyone. At last, the doc has ok'd me to get off bed rest and resume normal activity. I have finally had a chance to play around a bit with my 280dx. So far it has exceeded all my expectations. I'll be doing more in the coming days for sure but it's great to be back in the shop :D IMG_189...

Re: 17 Year old kid looking for some career advice

I was a heavy-equipment/diesel mechanic and welder for years. Had a very well equipped service truck, practically a shop on wheels (crane, air compressor, and of course a welder. I was fortunate enough to afford a Lincoln Commander 400). I traveled quite a bit to various jobs my employer had. Road j...

A minor quibble; probably has no bearing on this, but I thought gases can compress. Liquids, not so much. :geek:

What sort of warranty do they offer? The specs look reasonable enough. For the price it seems like a decent buy. Also take into consideration what consumables it uses. If they are proprietary, I'd steer clear of it.

I used silver-bearing solder in places and regular rosin core electronics solder everywhere else and plumbers solder paste for flux. Most soldering was done with a large gun but some parts needed the extra muscle of a small propane torch. I cleaned the whole thing in an ultrasonic parts cleaner to r...
