Re: Edge melt - too slow?

"Here I am welding 5mm carbon steel plate to 3mm wall square carbon steel tubing. Amps are 60, using 8lpm argon, 2.4mm electrode (2% Lanth) and 2.4mm ER70-S2 filler. Number 7 gas lens." Hi Kym, I am surprised at the low Amps where the minimum material thickness is 3mm. If I were to just tr...

Re: Welding aluminium tube to plate - tips?

Does the tube have to sit on top of the plate?

I did a job like this a while ago and cut a slit in the tube,
slid it over the plate and then had basically 4 easy T
joint welds.

[quote=" Sorry Allen - internal combustion cylinders only (and I only count the running ones) :D[/quote] Damn, my CI is only 51 so I am 10 almost 11 shy of the CI:age ratio. Do they make V8 welders? I only have 4 V8 cars at the moment, seems welders is the way to get this score back on track. ;)

Re: Affordable argon for Aussies?

Great news Kym, good to see you have had a great response from SupaGas, they were my second choice up here. The SpeedGas guy just happened to be an old retired farmer trying to make a bit on the side at first, and his attitude to customers I reckon is why he is now full time with employees deliverin...

Re: Tig mild steel, what am I doing wrong ?

P.S. I see a lot of you guys on the wrong side of the pond are quoting gas flow in CFH, whereas I only know litres per minute. Whats the conversion rate ? For ballpark figures, divide CFH by 2 and take off 1 for L/Min. (2.12 being the correct factor) And again, divide IPM by 40 for M/Min in wire fe...

Re: Affordable argon for Aussies?

Hi Kym, if you already own a small bottle just check that Power 10 won't let you trade it in on a larger one, that is what I did with SpeedGas, I just paid the guy the difference between E and G when the time came. All your comments and views appreciated. And yes a friend of mine with an aluminium f...

Re: Affordable argon for Aussies?

Hi Kym, I feel your pain, I am over 60 and approaching retirement and I have taken up MIG and TIG welding in the past few years and used to rent from CIG but now have bought my bottles from Speed Gas, 18 months rent buys the bottles, so I am in front now and forever. I have an E for 5:2 MIG gas, but...

Re: TIG welding shock absorber

Also be aware that the shaft is most likely highly polished chrome finished. If you get the slightest surface damage from the earth clamp that could very quickly tear the seals up resulting in loss of gas pressure and ultimately shock fluid.

Re: MIG welding stainless steel.

You would bleed at the cost to buy a He tri-mix in Aus. Just to put it into perspective, in Aus most exhaust shops just weld stainless exhausts with ER70S-6, their normal MIG wire. Some will TIG them properly, but it is uncommon unless for show or race cars. Terrible I know, but that is reality in t...

Re: Need help welding ductwork/thin sheetmetal

Far from an expert, but the manual for the 210MP lists the following starting points

18g 90/15.5
20g 80/15
22g 70/15

for ER70S-6 for C25
and
18g 90/18
20 80/17
22 N/A

for C100

hope that helps and I am sure much more knowledgeable people will chime in.

Re: Hi from SE Queensland

Hi Guys and thanks for the welcome. The TAFE quality does vary when you are not actively pursuing certificates for a job I think. I am lucky, going to the Bremer TAFE and my instructor is a lifetime blacksmith who now teaches. He is one of two old time instructors there who do the Night Welding cour...

Hi from SE Queensland

Hi all, I'm an older guy who has played with welding (gas and stick) since a kid but just this year decided to formalise the training and started TAFE Night Welding classes. Into my third term/semester now and doing mid level TIG having done basic and mid level MIG already. Not looking for a job wel...
