Re: TIG Application _ Brackets on a Motorcycle Frame

Well ... I just saw another reference to disconnecting the battery and grounding tig as close to the weld as possible. So, I'm going to try that.

Thanks

TIG Application _ Brackets on a Motorcycle Frame

I want to put a custom seat on a kawasaki and it just requires a couple of small brackets welded to the frame rail. If it was a bare frame - no big deal. It would take 2 minutes. But, the bike is all together and running. I read several opinions and there were recommendations on tig/mig/gas/brazing....

Re: Aluminum Preheating (when and how much)

Oh, that was funny. Developing a skill takes time ... who woulda thunk it?

There must be hundreds of variables !!! If you lived next door and walked over, I bet you could make 25 suggestions right off the bat.

Hey, thanks a bunch.

Re: Aluminum Preheating (when and how much)

Thanks Gurew, You know what, it is fun. I like that puddle; it is unmistakable that you "are there" and the puddle follows the arc. Its a beautiful thing to see that. OK - so ... for a air temp piece of aluminum which is what I'm wondering about: - for 1/8", set it to 176amps - point ...

Aluminum Preheating (when and how much)

Hello, When do you preheat aluminum and how much heat do you have to put into it to create that first puddle? Do I need to get the base material to 350F first? Is there a chart somewhere which shows for example current/base metal temp for a given thickness? The reason I ask is that when practicing o...

Re: HOW TO SET UP A WELDING STATION FOR TIG PRACTICE

Thanks Guys, I was able to get some aluminum beads on a flat 1/16 sheet, and made some very nice 1/4" steel welds right out of the shoot. How nice ... twist the knob, stomp the pedal ... its so much easier than a torch. Its a beautiful tool ! At this point, I'm keeping mental notes on settings ...

TIG WELDING - BANDSAW BLADES, IMPORT CAR FENDERS

I just got a lincoln tig and it came with a -17 torch and one 3/32 "red" tungsten electrode and a jug of argon but no setup documentation. What is the setup to weld a bandsaw blade? Do I need a 1/16" or an 040 or 020 setup? I have an '97 import car fender that needs a repair. I can on...

Re: Oxy-Acetylene Settings???

Tim, Don't want to offend you, but the info you provided is not accurate. You should check into the subject a little more. Jim, well it is offensive when you say someone is wrong without saying why. That is just plain ignorant. I'm talking about a turbo torch kinda thing for solder joints. If thats...

Re: Oxy-Acetylene Settings???

A rosebud tip is a heating tip that you use for making a low temp solder joint - copper water pipe, air conditioning pipe. its not a cutting tip. Rosebud tips for oxy/acet torches are operated with acetalene only and get their oxygen from the atmosphere. Or, you can get a rosebud specific soldering ...

Re: New member here and i have a question

You probably heard that relating to gas welding. Tank size makes a difference with acetylene. A small tanks cannot maintain the higher flow rate of a larger tank.

Day 1 ... Arc 1 ...

Hello Guys, Firstly, I think this website is fantastic. I have welded with gas using a henrob and meco midget. I like them. They are quick to set up and innexpensive to use. But, tried aluminum and didnt get good results. Actually, the results were poor although I did manage two aluminum repairs tha...

Re: HOW TO SET UP A WELDING STATION FOR TIG PRACTICE

I'm an analyzer, too. watch all jody's videos, grab some mild steel, then start an arc. really, nothing substitutes seat time and you'll have tons of questions after you've been welding for a while. feel free to ask away. Thank you. Thats really nice of you. I was just on craigslist looking for som...

Re: HOW TO SET UP A WELDING STATION FOR TIG PRACTICE

Thanks again, I appreciate the very specific reply. It saves me so much time. There are so many of them out there, I could look at gloves for days before I make a decision. I guess I have "analysis paralasis". So, that really helps. For me this is a labor of love; I enjoy welding projects ...

Re: HOW TO SET UP A WELDING STATION FOR TIG PRACTICE

Hello ogorir, Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. You know, when I read your reply for the first time, I felt like a real noob. I was trying to figure out how I missed the mark so badly. I stepped away, re-read, stepped away, re-read ... and then I got it. I started laughing. I am at the s...

HOW TO SET UP A WELDING STATION FOR TIG PRACTICE

Hello All, Hi guys and any gals. I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a Lincoln Precision TIG 225. I was googling around and I saw the tig aluminum training video. That was great. I need to do that for I'm guessing 40 hours or so to get the hang of it. (I have been using a Henrob oxy/acet torch fo...
