Re: Unknown Alu grade casting - filler selection

Actually, nevermind, I think I've just discovered that it's a zinc casting so a repair is highly unlikely unless it can be reliably brazed. It's not structural or safety related so a braze might work. What do you think?

Unknown Alu grade casting - filler selection

Hey guys. I'm more of a reader than a poster but I've been stumped today. I've had an original 1961 Lambretta TV175 Horncasting come in for repair on a large crack but I cannot find information about the type of aluminium used in said casting. It's colder than 4043 should usually feel in my shop and...

Re: My first tig weld

That fillet is either too hot, or bad gas coverage. A fillet traps gas better than a groove, and should show better color than that. Technique-wise, there's nothing wrong with it I can easily see. If you have too much angle between the torch and the work, you can draw air in and discolor the weld. ...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

You could be forgiven for thinking I've been making rollerskates for the Hulk. Linear casters required and specifically ordered to be overengineered to the extreme. The trolleys that these will go on (4, 1 per corner as you'd imagine) is required to take 6,500lbs in weight; for a guess each one of t...

About 500 of these, got quite good at them by the end even if it is just a quick fusion weld :D

Hello from Staffordshire, UK

For the SS it's specifically what the various grades are and what they're used for usually. Pretty much just increasing knowledge of materials in general as I'm getting a ton of welding and welding tools/consumables knowledge on the job (at least enough to keep it ahead of what I'm actually doing fo...

Re: Bored, had junk so building a table

Oh wow this is so cool, somewhat stupidly I've shown this to the missus who's words were 'Hey, you can start making me stuff like this at your new job, can't you?' I've gotta learn to keep it shut sometimes  Any clues on how much it's weighing in at? I'd imagine it's not in any danger of being ...

Re: Hello from Staffordshire, UK

Thanks guys. You're exactly right Otto, every week it seems like a new and more challenging job lands on my bench which makes me question whether I am capable for it yet; each time I have a crack at it and it comes out ok.....so far at least lol My main area to focus on learning right now is the var...

Hey folks. Just saying a quick hello to begin with before getting involved. Many years ago I was a ductwork fitter and gained plenty of experience working with drawings and various tools but after that ended up stuck in retail until a friend played a few good cards and got me in at this place as a w...
