Re: High Vacuum o-ring groove repair

This pic of the casting inside sez volumes--lots of porosity, etc. The machined grooves reveal the same. OP's main problem is not his setup, but the trash part he's expected to 'fix'. I'd be surprised if this part actually maintained high vacuum and if it's really prudent to use such a part in whate...

welding porous al casting -There's porosity in the parent casting, revealed by the groove machining. -Porosity is normal in 'normal' castings and can be more prevalent in the thinner sections. -Castings can be made to a higher level of minimum porosity--at added expense. Re: How do you tig weld in a tight spot?

Ok. I weld on cast aluminum at least once a week, and about every other week or so I come across a very tight spot in a casting that needs to be welded, that requires about a 1 inch long stickout or longer, and they always give me fits. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about. It's always the s...

Re: HF crackle problem

Sometimes I seem to have a problem with getting HF start to work correctly. It seems to crackle and spark from the whole tungsten and when an arc starts it sometimes comes from the gas lens. I suspect the collet is not making good contact with the electrode but seems to have a firm grip on the tung...

I have the htp 221, so I do have some features at my disposal. I have tried as much as 85%en but man the puddle gets grainy. I would like to stay in the 72-75%en realm. if maybe I had a practical application for the amplitude setting on the machine I could see if using that helps. Anyone use amplit...

Bevel your flats and weld butt joins and mabe finish with outside corner? That's how I would tackle it. A good butt join is just as strong as a fillet! 1-Fit the outside end corners to create a corner weld as (I think) crouchy sez. Beveling both the 45˚angle miter cuts to produce a bevel groove joi...

'I believe it'a an exhaust, I'll talk to the customer. It's not a crack, in the first pic (1347a) you can see the underside of the "patch" sitting in the cutout area. What looks like a crack in the second pic is the gap you can see in the 1st pic. The patch cuts across the inside diameter...

Breaking off the tungsten end with pliers/dykes, etc.; prior to point grinding, is a great way to induce
tight fracturing down the length. Grinding off the used end with cutoff wheel, etc. doesn't do that.

So to fix the blow out in the first pic...are you drilling back through that spot and then filling it back in with the Tig once everything has cooled off to see if the outgassing quits giving you trouble closing the hole? Grind, bur all that porosity out and feather. Simply drilling isn't going to ...
