Re: Getting started with stick... rod selection?

For someone just starting out, I used to start my new people on E7024 just to get them running some beads on plate and learning to lay down some material, and setting up the machine. Have them play with the amperage to see what it looks like when too cold and too hot, etc...After they start getting ...

Re: Hot dip galvanizing and cracks

Do you ever use spray on particles, in a volatile suspension, like black iron powder or just the sprinkle on stuff? Are you referring to the MT powder that is used to find the cracks? I use a puffer to gently blow the particles over the area and then then the flux leakage generated at the crack fro...

Re: Hot dip galvanizing and cracks

On second thought, it could be the method you used to make the coping (gas cutting etc) has hardened the area and introduced residual stresses. Just a wild guess. That was a thought, we even tried drilling the copes in to eliminate the surface hardening and microfissures that can occur with oxy/fue...

Did they ever bother to concrete the floor for you? That looks abit 3rd world. Is this question for me? If so, that pic was taken in the material receiving department, it was the only place that I could lay it all out and put it together without disrupting the entire shop(due to the over head crane...

Try adding time to the delay setting. That will keep it dark a tad longer so it's not flashing back and forth. I have to do that when welding outside in the bright sunlight.

small dome

Here is a neat project I worked on at my previous employer. We fabricated this and assembled it before sending it off to the jobsite. It was built out of rolled W8x10's for the spines, and the bottom ring was made from rolled TS8x4x1/2 tubing, the top compression ring couldn't be rolled to that tigh...

Re: Airframe Welding

(don't laugh) Here is a pic of my first ever Tig weld...I'm not sure of the wall thickness of this tubing, but it was thinner than the paperclip I used as filler. Been awhile so I don't remember the machine settings. I opened the box when the welder was delivered that day and this was the first time...

I took no offence to any of it.. I am going to the scrap yard tomorrow and i an going to burn, burn, burn! Thank you all for your help! If you don't have any flats handy, you can still practice running stringers longways on the tube....just practice forming a puddle and moving the puddle along long...

falls between 1/16"[0.0625"] and 1/8"[0.125"]

Here is a piece of TS6x6x5/8 that was sawed (no torch cuts)....no MT needed to see this one.

Re: Rookie looking for help!

I was going to suggest using a swinging target vs a fixed one...but several have already suggested that.

Maybe use a swinging target but also tie it back at a few degrees so that it deflects the round into the ground/sand pile.

Re: Hot dip galvanizing and cracks

Something else that effects the look of the finish of the galvanizing is whether or not the piece is quenched or not....we usually don't get it quenched so that it can be top coated with paint if the end user needs to paint it for some reason. Here is another pic of some cracking away from the welde...

Gas coverage?
Running out of gas will get your attention pretty quick...I hadn't used my Tig machine for a while so I pulled it out this weekend and gave a quick purge, then lit up on some steel...instant flame thrower. Looked back at the gages and the needle was on zero...(out of gas).

Re: Trouble with butt-weld penetration

Thanks j wright. Good priced is also good especially after Xmas time! :D Do you think I'm on the right track re the penetration also? Well...more voltage and slower travel speed without an increase in WFS(amps) will equate to a hotter, more fluid puddle, so if you stay out on the leading edge of th...
