Re: new to tig welding

Like the others have stated, need mo info....there are some "rules of the thumb" that apply to material thickness and a "starting place" to set the amperage. ie. you need approximately 1 amp for every thousandths of thickness when welding mild steel. So..... .125"(1/8")...

Any good? How do they compare to some of the larger names like JET? I have the samll Northern (4.5x6 with 1/2" x 64.5" blade) saw at home in my lil shop. You get what you pay for. That lil saw has cut a lot of material but the castings and machined surfaces are not as true and nice as hig...

Re: Welding 4130 Chromoly

The whole point of preheating it is to slow the cooling rate of the entire piece too keep the martensite at bay. This is something that I had been taught when dealing with welding thick sections of mild steel....the thick sections tend to be a huge heat sink and cooled the weld off too quickly, so ...

Re: New welder, new to welding question?

I believe your tungsten might be turning black or other colors due do insufficient post flow gas shielding. You must set your post flow long enough to allow your tungsten to not be red any longer and then the gas shut off, to put it in simple terms. 10-15 cfh is sufficient gas flow for practice. Yu...

Yeah, I was horribly uncomfortable. He had me welding with my arms cocked all weird and the rod coming 90 deg out the side of the stinger. Another student suggested I hang the whip up and have the rod come out the tip of the stinger. Night & day! Something else that helps is to throw some extra...

To complement Mr. Wright's statement it is likely your gas flow is to high. I posted a article to back this up a long time ago and will try to look it back up and post it here. What is your CFH? -Jonathan I had a kid in our shop who thought a little gas is good so a lot must be better...LOL I think...

That gas flow sounds good to me, I wrote my WPSs for the (1/16" and 3/32")FCAW that we used at 40-45cfh and generally didn't have any coverage issues unless a OH door was opened or a shop fan accidentally turned in the direction of the welding.

LOL... pass x-ray = great welder I've heard the same thing in the structural steel world when a welder passes a UT of a CJP weld. Re: Advice Welcome

The shop I was in was always worried about the cost of supplies, so CO2 was the shielding of choice due to it being cheaper than the argon mixes. It works well with 1/16" ESAB E71T-1 and the like. That small diameter wire (.035) has to really pile up to run passes as large as the OP is posting ...
