Re: Inquiring about the "Sense" program
The SENSE program provides some standardization for welding knowledge and skills based upon surveys done by the American Welding Society a few years back. My program is registered as a SENSE school however not all courses will comply. There are specific requirements spelled out for participating and...

Looks pretty nice to me for a vertical, especially if thats your 1st layer vertical.
How many hours of practice do you have in training now ?

Re: Hello from St. Johns MI.
Welcome.
I am still pretty good at cleaning tungsten myself, maybe even getting better.
That skill is going opposite the others as I get older.
Hope your hands steady up, but even with a little shake, its all good.

Re: Amperage Voltage settings??
Welcome to the Forum. There is a calculator at http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/calculators/mig_solid_amperage_calculator.php that will get you started. With GMAW(MIG) the amperage is a result of the wire feed speed. The setting at the above site should get you started. Miller also has an Androi...

Some Overhead 6010 at 400 FPS
I was toying with the idea of making a video to promote our welding classes. Here is what I have started with. Its low resolution because of the camera I used but I kinda liked the way it came out for 20 minutes of work. Maybe some of the captions may not attract anyone, but its what came to my mind...

Re: Vertical 7018 1/8
I would suggest turning it down on the vertical for now. Maybe try 110-115.
If you are practicing on material 3/16-1/4 thick you could turn it down farther.
As you move the rod side to side, spend more time on the sides and less in the middle.
Have a good day.

I looked at the sourcecode and it may be the fact that the video is Flash or the hit counter at the bottom that no longer functions because frontpage doesnt work any more. You can also do a search for the program "Weldcad" and probably find it on Lincolns site. I just made the video to sho...

This program is still available for download. I have a video I did years ago showing some of the capabilities. Not sure if it will run on todays machines but figured it may be of use to someone.

On larger gaps I will sometimes feed through the gap. It help me keep a little reinforcement on the ID if there is a condition that requires it. Thanks, Gerald, Generally, I'd agree that "as the welder" my knowledge requirements don't expand much beyond the WPS, but I'm pretty sure that when this comes down, I'm going to be asked to administer the program. Thus, my expanded interest. We've been coached very tightly through materia...

Re: 309 test on carbon steel pipe
Taz, That approach makes much more sense than a cover-to-cover read. SO much of the material in IX will never apply to me, and that seems like a great way to weed out the superfluous. @weldingt, I'm assuming the audit is a combined NBIC/ASME, so there will be a code book available to me at work. I'...

Re: 309 test on carbon steel pipe
If you are having ab NBIC audit I am pretty sure you will have to have a current code book but I may be wrong. For joint reviews (ASME and NBIC) you do.
I am by no means an expert but would be glad to help you when I can.

Re: Control on keyhole
Well I just spent a hour practicing: 1) Fixing the ground connection really helped keeping the electrode lit. 2) I found I have to turn the current down to about 70 amps ( 3/32 ) to even have a chance of controlling the puddle. And, with the ground fixed, I can keep the rod lit at this amperage. 3)...

Re: 309 test on carbon steel pipe
Hello, Just like to add a few things. As far as ASME Sec IX goes. For GTAW, Testing with Er70S-X and Carbon Steel Pipe with GTAW qualifies you to weld on both Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel pipe. Here is why Sec IX groups both base metals and filler metals into groups. Some of the rules within the...
