Re: Fixing a tool: hard facing or ???

Hard facing will only reduce wear on the surface. It won’t change the strength of the base material your working with. Huh?? Who said I am trying to increase the strength of the base material? I think a carbide saw blade is a pretty obvious example of something hard attached to something softer. It...

Fixing a tool: hard facing or ???

I am working on fixing/ improving a tool I use for my job. The tool is for installing and removing pipe fittings used on underground storage tanks (fill and vapor recovery adapters). It's mostly just a piece of 5" schedule 40 pipe with some notches cut into it, but don't be deceived...it costs ...

Re: A hood that doesn't flash when the forklift drives by???

That's interesting if apparently no visible light from the strobe is reaching you than it would seem as if there may be some kind electromagnetic effect on your helmet sensors. Why does tinfoil come to mind? It stops aliens from reading your brain waves and prevents bad people from reading your cre...

The Esab is roughly half price of the Miller.

I kind of expected they were cheap. We had a major restructuring in the shop recently, creating a new welding area...and they bought 30+ curtains all at once.

Re: A hood that doesn't flash when the forklift drives by???

This may have nothing to do with your hood problem but I am wondering if the forklift had a strobe light operating and if it had a point ignition ( highly unlikely ) When I was in construction we used lazer levels constantly. We soon found that they could cause the receiver to act erratically and t...

Re: A hood that doesn't flash when the forklift drives by???

I have the Titanium 9400 I from Miller and I use X mode whenever I am in the sun or there are bright lights or I get flashed. It handles those light issues. I don't know anyone else that has it. It detects the electromagnetic field and reacts off of that, if Miller was smart, they patented it :) Fu...

Re: A hood that doesn't flash when the forklift drives by???

I'm looking for hood that isn't quite as annoying. I'm using a Lincoln 3350, which is great, except when the pipe fitters leave the forklift running behind me for extended periods of time. Other guys say they have the same problem, so It seems it is common for any hood using optical sensors...so I ...

Re: Color on MIG welded stainless steel

You are dealing with several misconceptions. They sound logical, but... Helium does not float away. It goes where you point it, like any other gas that's flowing. Turn your gas down to 20-25 (Helium does not lift the ball as much because of it's lower density, so your actual flow is higher than ind...

Re: Color on MIG welded stainless steel

I think I figured it out. I didn't know for sure that I had a problem, but I felt that something wasn't quite right. I started thinking that what I really need was to get more amps WITHOUT increasing voltage or wire speed...so I thought I should try .035" wire. I don't understand why this is, b...

Color on MIG welded stainless steel

Hey, I'm hoping some experienced guys can help give me some advice? I'm MIG welding 16ga ductwork, and the issue of weld color has come up. With TIG, yeah, we know we want "straw" color, but nobody at the shop seems to care about getting color when MIG welding. One experienced guy was impr...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Today I was using an old Esab welder; they said it was "touchy". It was fine all morning, but when I came back from lunch it abruptly started malfunctioning. It would "Pop" every time I tried to start a weld, and the actual volts and amps on the machine were all over the place. I...

The Dynasty is probably excessive for a hobbyist or occasional use. But I think the Dynasty is good value to a person who relies on it to make a living. As for excessive for hobby use, nonsense! I hope to one day own a 280dx for hobbyist use! Need/want pretty much the same thing. Or at least ...

Re: Miller Dynasty 210 DX

I used the Dynasty 200 DX machines in school and now at work. That's what I'll buy...but I'll probably jump to the 280dx for water cooling and more grunt. I'll buy it for features, user interface, my familiarity with the machine, reliability, local support, etc. Work has 15+ Dynasty and Maxstar mach...

Re: Stainless--11ga Open Corner TIG and the way I did it

So my boss got me a gas lens like was suggested here, and it's been working out well. It's amazing to me how some weld beads on stainless stay silver, that or they are the "straw" color I always hear people talking about. I think it welds better in general, although it is hard for me to kn...

If your goal is to be ready for the "real world", then practice welding in circles (around pipe, rod, tube, etc), and try welding materials of drastically different thicknesses...different thickness materials + gaps is particularly fun. Shortly after I started my job, just out of welding s...

Re: tig welding practice, any tips?

What I did in school...I started running beads just like Jody always says. I took a chunk of steel, maybe 3/8"x3"x8", and covered it with weld beads. When I got to the edge of the metal, I just turned it on it's side and welded the edge, then across the back. I joked that I was going ...

Are you doing a little weave with the torch? And did you weld it in the position you photographed it in?

Re: Stainless--11ga Open Corner TIG and the way I did it

Yes that was with a gas lens and my CK gas saver setup (1-1/8" cup) the color is all gas cover and heat input. The thicker filler required more amps to allow it to flow I didn't like the amount of heat I was putting in. It brushed out shiny but I know it was to much. If you do a lot of stainle...

Here's another very small gap .035" filler, 50amps, 2.5pps, 1/16" tung... Swapped to my CK Flex-loc, my reg Miller 17 was welding awful gray, new bottle too...hmm something going on. There was no gap. There was just enough overlap to be able to easily tack the two pieces together. I like ...

Re: Stainless--11ga Open Corner TIG and the way I did it

This project is industrial but not food grade, and the appearance of the welds doesn't matter to my boss. I'm surprised by how much he doesn't care. (But he cares about food grade conveyors and such...) On the first order, I struggled to get a convex weld, and nobody cared. The welds I'm doing now a...

Re: Stainless--11ga Open Corner TIG and the way I did it

Why a open corner? If were me and I wanted a open style joint, I'd fit them like a step so the edges would be butted, lay 1/16" filler in, 2.5pps (if you want the ripple look, higher pulses would smooth it out) 70% on 30% background, 3/32" tung with a large gas lens, I'd start with 90amps...

sticking with the 4B stainless theme... I think this is a wall mounted garbage can, maybe for biohazard waste? It's for a hospital.

We use the Walter 2 in 1 wheels to polish and fix/replace grain. Same idea as in the post above.

Stainless--11ga Open Corner TIG and the way I did it

Now that I'm almost done with this project, I thought I'd post a couple pictures to share what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, and also to ask for suggestions to do it better. I can always do it better, right? When I clean it up, it suddenly looks inconsistent. The job is welding 11ga stainless with...
