Re: 4943, cast aluminum, and hot short cracking
Problem solved. I believe there were cracks from the impact that were moving during welding that were not visible to my poor eyes.

Funny, I live 20 miles from the town they invented 4943 in and its almost impossible to find in a quantity less than a pallet.

Re: 4943, cast aluminum, and hot short cracking
Yeah, I have a sneaking suspicion that these newer yamaha lower units are either higher in mag content or cast out of a 7000 series alloy. While welding the new skeg on, (I use tig), I would get the distinctive click, I could feel it in the piece. Classic hot short cracking. After grinding the weld ...

4943, cast aluminum, and hot short cracking
So, I have repaired a hundred or so skegs over the last few years. Usually I use 5356 and cast skeg blank from a well known company. I have in the shop a Yamaha lower unit that I can not get done. I have tried several of my tricks including buttering, knife edge with gap, pre heat, the works. Questi...

So I emailed wolfram as I was interested in these. I use their Tri Mix. They informed me that if using an inverter like my Dynasty to stick with the trimix. The alustar would have an advantage on a transformer power source.

Re: Favorite Gloves?
Every time I buy a set I really like, either the price triples, or they're no longer available when I go to get another set. My favorites are the Mars gloves. Especially the high-temp ones that will take (and protect you from) 800F for 30 seconds. Awesome gloves. I really don't use them for welding...

Re: Is there a secret to TIG Tack welds?
I may be able to throw a couple things that were not stressed sufficiently IMHO. 1. Fit up. When just starting out and learning fitup will be crucial. For this outside corner especially. Make sure both pieces are touching each other until you get the hang of washing a tack pool over. 2. The puddle m...

Re: Support Frame/Beams for garage rack/shevles
I had been thinking of doing similar. Wasn't sure welding to the frame would be good. I think I'll put it on today's list as I am out of parts, thanks Oscar. I store engine blocks on my shelves and after 10 years the sagging is bad.

Re: CK flex head feedback from long term users?
I've been running the Radnor flex #20 for a couple years. It's identical to the ck, probably same torch. It's harder to adjust than one might think. Adjuat it once It's warmed up,, cold adjustment is not as good for them I understand. It doesn't flex as much as I thought it would. It is perfect. The...

Re: Edge vs Furick vs ?
I am not sure which Pyrex I have. Probably furick? As I bought them from Jody site. They are fragile. I only use them when using a mirror. Like on the back side of a bracket where you can't see straight on. It's not like you are really looking through the cup, it's more the extra lighting on the wel...

Anyone remember a good plasma cut thread?
Just like the tittle. Can someone link to a good thread about which plasma to buy? Criteria: 1. absolutely no China. 2. Hopefully cut and pierce .083 to .250 Al. 3. Preferably name brand. It's for my shop, I dont want a discount offshore thing. 4. It would be nice if could someday be installed in a ...

I just installed planing boards on a 24 ft toon. So about 80' at 225 amps. Only stopping to grab rods and reposition. Didn't phase the 280. Really a spool gun job but they pay me to tig it.

They have a very wide kerf, like 1/2". Can be tricky to get started. No margin of error, they cut instantly what they touch. Gloves won't protect like with a disc. Someone gave me one, a used one. I took it out of the shop. Some of the meat heads I have around here...let's just say I don't want...

Shaft drive weed whacker with a 7-1/2” circular saw blade on it. The real problem is the roots. Cover it with black plastic after for a year or two. Yes, I have done the weed Wacker. The issue is all the sharp pointy left that just regrow by the end of summer. This stuff pokes holes in tires of som...

Looks great Matt. Thumbs up. What bender did you get? Did you like it? What type of setup did you go with for the copes? After all the discussion did you decide on filler size or just what was needed for each quality of fit up? Did you decide to back purge? Looks like a lot of enjoyable work. Good f...

How to kill blackberry growth? Any farmers? Exponential gr
Well, for several years wild blackberries have been encroaching on the shop. They are a waist high crop of prickly, very prickly somewhat vine like growth that gets I believe blackberries. It's a couple acres worth of growth now. They expanded exponentially the last two seasons. I may be exaggeratin...

I'm thinking of upgrading my 2018 280DX tig runner. Might be willing to sell depending on price. Accountant says I need to buy newer equipment.
