which type of filler rod to use

Repairing some steering components on an 1931 era Model A Ford calls for replacing some round steel rod balls onto the forged tie rod and radius rods by drilling out the old balls and inserting these replacement shanked balls into the drilled holes then TIG welding. What type of rod should we be usi...

silicon bronze bead on mild steel not shiny

I've been doing a fair amount of TIG welding on thin mild steel and aluminum and little bit of SilB brazing of mild steel with silicon brazing rod but I cannot get a nice clean shiny bead with the silicon bronze. It always appears sooty color. details: 2% lanthanated, DC current, 5-7 litres of argon...

Re: aluminum gas tank repair

Olivero: I know the complete history on the aluminum tank, another welder by trade made it for a buddy of mine and it has never had any flammables inside the tank. Only low pressure air to check for leaks. The leaks are pinhole size. I was also thinking of purging it with argon but wonder if it woul...

aluminum gas tank repair

I have a job coming in to repair small leaks on an aluminum gas tank. This is a brand new tank which has never seen any flammable liquid as of yet. The builder has applied very low pressure air to test for leaks and there are a few I would like to try to repair. The rectangular tank is very close to...

hello from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

I've been lurking here on this forum for almost two years, Back in 1963 I specialized in welding at high school but never worked as a welder. Looking back in those days the TIG welding machines were almost 5 feet in length if memories serve me correctly. My interests now are mostly in restoring and ...

Re: newbie with lots of torch questions

Ace - I'm not fixated on using the torch mounted switch. I'm aware of the functions of the foot pedal because I have previously tried it and yes I can see how you professionals would want to use it, however, for now I'm just trying to learn how to weld without the pedal because some of my planned we...

newbie with lots of torch questions

I hope this is the right category for my questions. A few years ago I bought my Everlast PowerPro 205 R series multi process machine which came with a # 26 TIG torch equipped with a trigger along with a foot pedal. I found this to be cumbersome and heavy and I believe this added to my difficulty in ...
