Re: AWS welding course in SE La.

With only 7 paid seats (including mine), out of 20, the course is happening after all.

They will still take enrollment until the 22nd. Class starts on the 18th.

Re: The Welding Library

I think this comes from using Scotchbrite on old metal. If there's any texture to the metal surface, you can trap particles. On new clean metal this is unlikely, and the acetone and IPA washes should remove any minor residue. Steve S Once again, you are correct , sir. :) The washes are to remove du...

I know for sure that NASA does. They consider the ground clamp as a constant. Everything is based off the ground.

DCEN with pure He is doable for anyone with transformer or inverter, but most aren't doing this.

Re: TIG Welding Aluminum on DC

Mil and NASA specs can be niche techniques that only apply to one or a few applications. The R&D can take years (or sometimes by chance). I've seen overkill work that would be completely unnecessary in the public world, but makes total sense to NASA. We build man-rated space flight vehicles. The...

Ground clamp on the negative leg, torch on the positive (our symbol for this is DC-). We work to WPS that has been used for a couple of decades and approved by our customer: NASA. Re: TIG Welding Aluminum on DC

It's what we use at work because of the alloy. 2219 and 2195. 2% Thoriated keeps a nice focused arc and the He keeps the parent material hotter without cranking up the Amps.

Add the rest of the recipe and we can keep the weld clean without AC or a wandering arc. We have to for the customer.

TRACKRANGER is correct. 2000 series are expensive and touchy if you are just practicing. Those are generally aircraft and aerospace grade alloys.

All others he mentioned are worth the effort to buy some coupons and practice on them at home or shop.

I've gotten into this debate many times with younger welders right out of school all the way up to welders twice my age and experience. The debate about TIG welding Aluminum on DC. Al is all we work with. We have our prep down to an art due to the fact that we hate rework. So, I'm not quite sure this will help you due to the overkill methods we use: IF you have access, clean (120 Scotchbrite or stainless wire wheel/brush then acetone and then IPA) both sides to get to new meta...

A co-worker suggested I adjust my air. I currently have it set at 50psi. He suggested I lower it to 25 and slowly bring it up until I find the sweet spot for the torch.

We've been working 10's here at the rocket factory, but I may get a few minutes to try out the settings tonite.

I may have to adjust the settings (which is a job in itself due to the lack of an owners manual) to find the right ones for the WSD-60. This is the one I purchased: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221009510427?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Everything connects just fine, incl...

The new torch is a WSD-60P. I kept trying to get it to ignite the air as it normally should be done. However, that was easier said than done. I ended up pressing the tip closer to the material and it would start or touching the edge to start it. When it would start, it wasn't cutting the material (1...

Sorry about not updating this thread. I did get it hooked up. the wire guide on the cup keeps it from starting. I had to push down to get the tip close enough for an arc to ignite the air. The same guide might be my issue of it not cutting properly. It wants to gouge instead of cut. I'll have to pla...

What kind of issues can you encounter with friction stir? I.E. inclusions, porosity, etc. Porosity is our biggest issue. Luckily, it's all robotic. CNC controlled. Highly repeatable. As far as inclusions, as long as the prep is right, the parent material is pure/clear and we don't have a bug land i...
