Tig Welding Brass

I got a piece of scrap brass from an old sailboat and figured I would give it a shot at TIG with both a low sulfur brass and copper Romex wire as filler. I have had brass/bronze wear parts before that needed building up so why not experiment? The material was 2"x1/8" and I cut it into abou...

Re: Ever forget how to weld?

I quit counting the bad days and now count the good days. It's easier because there's less of them. I've always had a 3 mistake rule. 1 mistake was a whoops. 2 mistakes and something needs to change. 3rd mistake and I quit for the day. Now I quit at 2.

I'm a little late to the discussion. Face and neck tattoos and your definitely out. Women with tattoos in the nether regions that are willing to leave them uncovered are definitely in. All others are case by case.

I mentioned it to the shorter half and she packed my gear. She looked pretty disappointed that it wasn't until November. I'm trying to decide whether to drive or fly. Including the trip to the airport and back I can probably drive the 500 miles quicker.

Re: Welding A freeze crack in a small aluminum water pump

Hi guys I'm jumping back in here after my confuser has been in the revolt mode for a while. Jody just posted up a pretty good video on AL casting repair. A VERY important thing he covered is to stop the crack by drilling the end of it. On the preheat thing,, I would heat to around 450 plus or minus....

I use the model from Tech South, works very well, no complaints at all!

I've had that grinder for years with zero problems.

Re: shocking update

I was going to do a quickie weld job and went at it bare handed and bare arms. I rested both forearms on the edge of my table (1/2" AR plate) stepped on the pedal and touched the tungsten to the filler. HOLY SHIT!! I'm not sure exactly where it got me but it got me.

I have some .035 silicon bronze MIG wire I'm going to try as filler. Should be interesting.

While your at Harbor Freight, they have a little 3 piece diamond grinding wheel set that works pretty good. I haven't tried it on tungsten but it has held up on other things OK.

I couldn't see it at all. I went back over it staying off to the side a bit. It aint great but for my second ...

After welding I brought the overall temp back up to around 500+ and then wrapped it in a bunch of old gloves and wrapped those in a leather bib. It took about 2-3 hours to come back to less than 200. An infra red is really helpful in welding cast. You can use the oil smoke method but the infra red i...

Competition is what drives me to become better at something. Even if it's beating myself. At my age I don't have many goals anymore. Right now my goal is to be as good a welder as I think I am.
