Re: Razor Blades

You guys are really giving me drive to accomplish this. I think we need some "rules". The first pix by sedanman look like a 90* weld. The rest look like flat but welds with filler and using the table as backing. I'll try that next. My un-backed 90* weld with no filler look like a bird crap...

Re: TIG ELECTRODE FLASH

A lot of people misunderstand the function of the delay settig. It does not control darkening time. It adjusts the delay to return to non darkened state. If you have the delay set to minimum, then any interruption in the sensor signal and the lense switches off. Exactly what I said only the other e...

X2 Turn up the sensitivity. If your getting flash it's probably when the arc diminishes a bit. The delay in my Jackson Nexgen controls how long it stays dark after the arc subsides.

Re: Let's see pics of your home shop

We built this in 1999. There's a long short story behind it but enough to say for now that it was my wife's idea to build a shop instead of a new house.

Re: Dang bugs

This time of year we have zillions of deer flies. I call them ear flies as they are constantly in your ears and in my hood. I use 99% Deet and overhead fans and a cross flow fan. If I'm doing TIG , you have to block the wind. MiG isn't bothered so much. Sometimes I just quit and go in for the day.

Re: Razor Blades

OK so I welded them together but they are going to leak! They are only stuck together where the blobs start and stop. This is going to take some practice.

Re: Razor Blades

HTP 221 set on 14 amps with .040 2% lanthinated. #20 flex head torch with a gas lens and #8 cup. 18-20 cfh. Blades leaning on each other. No filler. Lost a little bit of shielding near the end , probably could have compensated with torch angle. Fantastic! I'm going to use your settings and see how ...

Re: Gutter down spouts

Yeh,, I've done a shitload of galvanized and it's always a pita. I've always drunk a little milk first, yes it does keep your stomach from getting weird. I was hoping that just maybe someone had some sort of miracle method for doing something other than soldering which I suck at.

Gutter down spouts

I have to build a bunch of galvanized down spouts for a customer. Has anybody welded rather than soldered? If so what filler or wire did you use?

Re: Razor Blades

Thanks. I checked one of them out and will give it a shot. One little correction,,,, I am one of the students. I've been welding since I was 16 around 1967-8 but decided to take class for TIG as I didn't quite have a grasp on technique. So, I'm the only one in the class who gets both a senior and st...

Razor Blades

I'm going to start a second semester welding class this coming week as I had a blast last semester. At 64 they let me do pretty much whatever I want and I love it! What I'd like to do is weld a couple stainless razor blades for show off time. Can anybody give me some basic parameter for settings? I ...

Re: Broken POS vice

All done, I hope. I ended up Tig with cleaned Ni-Rod. It ran like butter, smooth and quiet. I pre-heated to steady 700*. I ran in short stringers of around 3/4 inch. I did the root pass at 160amp wide open. Then dropped to 130 and feathered amps as necessary. It's not the prettiest but it was a toug...

Re: Broken POS vice

I apologize John, I just couldn't resist. I happen to agree with always trying something rather than pitching into the scrap pile. I just wish I had more time. I don't even have time to fish. As to the vise repair. Some of those style vices are hollow in the tube section. Where the round meets the ...

Re: Broken POS vice

My plan is to crunch it back to zero crack then grind out the easiest to reach 1/4 to 1/3 then weld it. Next I can take the vise apart drill the 2 ends of the original crack and grind, heat, weld and beat those 2 ends. Then I'll go back and grind out the cold weld section I did first and lay that in...

Broken POS vice

I broke the arm on my old POS cast iron vice. I contacted the Mfg. and even though it was lifetime warranty, the warranty is up as they don't support bench vises anymore. The good side is they are going to send me $50.00. Question is that now I have a great 'chunk-o-iron' to experiment on. I've done...

Farmwelding is right, I have to admit, that decision has worked out very well, as this has to be the most civil welding forum I've yet encountered. Steve S We can fix that. I actually have to agree for the most part it a great place for exchanging info. Thanks to most everybody for keeping it civil.

Re: Welding Contaminated Aluminum

Remember there's nothing wrong with doing a cleaning pass or two with the tig torch prior to actually welding the casting. It seems to really help on some of them. Wish I could find a torch to hold the piece of 1/4" tungsten I have. Would be perfect for high balance cleaning passes. Got it and...

Re: Welding Contaminated Aluminum

If you can grind it back and go over again, you can get rid of much of the porosity. I've had to weld more electrolysis than I care to. Sucks the big one. There's no real porosity in the welded crack area. I know we are supposed to be proud of our work and cosmetically beautiful work is like a busi...
