Proto Bad Customer Service

I usually ndon't have much to say about customer service except when it is REALLY POOR. I have a few Proto Industrial 3/4 drive sockets, and besides the quality being funky the replacement for Lifetime Guarantee is really funky. I sent in a worn out 3/4 drive , 15/16 socket for replacement. First, I...

Re: Grouser Bar

The hold down is just a 2" C clamp that happened to be the right size to slip it over the oxy lever and hold it enough to cut. I was using a spring clamp before but it was tough to get it in place and if there was a blow out, I couldn't get it off easily enough. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow a...

Here's the track torch in action. Mind you it's all built out of scrap, including the table.

Re: Grouser Bar

Thanks for the reply. First I gotta say I got a giggle about taking the dozer for a spin! Hmm, maybe a quick trip to the store? I went with the .045 ESAB 7011 Ultra. It seems to run pretty smoothly. I don't have any real concerns about the abilities of the wire to do it's job. The procedure I decide...

Grouser Bar

Does anybody have any thoughts or opinions on wire selection for grouser bar welding? The recommended wire is Lincoln NS3M. My problem with that is that I can't run wire that big with what I have on hand. I believe it's a .078 wire. Besides needing to get the wire, I'd need drive rollers etc. The re...

I have had very good luck with Tide and warm water pressure washing to clean diesel tanks for welding. Also to be safe , after cleaning make your cuts with a sawzall/skill saw. That eliminates any hot spark from a plasma. Be smart and think smart and you will be fine.

Re: New to TIG

John - If you haven't yet, invest in a quality gas lens and some decent cups. The tungsten size for your application doesn't matter. Stick with a 3/32 tungsten because it will do 5 amps all the way up to 200 amps comfortably. On both AC and DC. For thin material, gas coverage is equally important t...

Re: exhaust manifold

This may be a little late to the party but I would preheat the entire manifold to 4-500* and tig 99% nickel stick rod after removing all the flux coating and buffing down the cast to a clean and shiny surface. I would then wrap the manifold in fire/heat resistant material, an old leather welding jac...

Looking for a flexible tig cable

Does anybody have a suggestion for a very flexible tig torch cable for 200 amp air cooled? I have an OEM Lincoln 12' rubber with a denim protector sleeve and it seems to be constantly twisting my wrist.

Re: Tight spot

I'm cheating. I decided to cut the short necked filler off and replace it with another that's already welded to a 4" square and just weld the assy. down . It should be much simpler and cleaner.

Tight spot

I have a very tight spot to weld a filler neck on an aluminum tank under the 90* elbow. There's about 3/8" between the pipe and the tank and a cup just won't fit in there. I'm thinking about trying 1/2-3/4" stick out and flooding the area with argon from another bottle. I already tried to ...

Re: Lincoln SQ Wave 175 Pro value

I couldn't find anything comparable around here but around $1200.00 with the 225cu. bottle was what I had in mind. It all depends on how much argon is in the bottle too.

Lincoln SQ Wave 175 Pro value

I just picked up a Lincoln Square Wave 175 Pro TIG in a trade/cash/labor deal. It's complete w/cart and has a customer owned argon bottle to go with it. I welded some 1/8" AL with it and it runs great. I know the shop it came out of and know the history behind it for the last 10 years or so. It...

Lincoln couldn't supply a new board as they were back ordered to mid Sept. I was #31 on a list at the repair facility that had 10 of them coming. Lincoln sent a refurb machine instead and that one is FUBAR also. The Lincoln Rep is coming out tomorrow and we are going to talk about getting rid of the...

Re: Simple Question What Brand of Welding Gloves do you have

I've used Tillman gloves longer than I can remember of one style or another depending on what process I'm doing. I mainly stick with the 24cxl. Another reason I like the Tillman is that their extra large gloves are actually extra large and I can comfortably wear them all day.

I kinda got a giggle out of that too. First when they couldn't find an "issue" they charged me $90.00 for the diagnostics as there was nothing they could find. After I insisted on testing it and they realized there WAS a problem , I got my $$ back. As far as the Lincoln rep saying there ar...

Sq Wave 200 Issues

Has anybody seen any problems with their Square Wave 200? I finished up a fair size al job and everything ran as it should. I fired it back up a week later and it acted like the gas flow was interrupting. I did a few checks and decide to take it in for warranty service. I mentioned that I thought it...
