wire size

I am completely new to all processes of welding but picked up a mig and I'm hoping to be able to tackle some projects. I will be using mostly 3/16" steel plate but up to 1/4" welding it to aprox.1/8" steel. It will be some lap joints and some filet (?). My question is what wire size w...

Gas suppliers

I'm in Ca. and looking to get a tank with 75/25 for my mig. Just wondering who you guys find to have the best prices for tank and gas. From what I'm told the closest welding supply is a bit on the high side, a 25 min. drive away is an Airgas, Praxair, Barnes and maybe a couple others.

Thanks.

Re: miller stingy

Well it looks like they're giving a little more now, at least with the 211. Starting may 1st their giving a free spool gun on top of the $200 rebate that's already in affect. Looks like I bought a couple weeks to soon.

miller stingy

Why is Miller so stingy? I recently picked up a millermatic 211 not really paying attention to what was included. The lincoln 180 dual I was considering comes with solid and flux wire, gas and gasless nozzles, knurled and smooth drive rolls in various sizes and various size tips. The Miller only com...

Re: Correctly wiring a 30 to 50A extension cord

I started a thread asking about using a setup like the one you made on a 30a dryer circuit. I have to ask, on the 30a 3 prong circuit you will be plugging into is it 2 hots and a ground or 2 hots and a neutral? Lol, I laugh because I'm getting some insisting that its wrong to use a setup like you ma...

I bought the 10/3 wire, plug and receptacle at Ace Hardware.
Thanks, I haven't looked at ace yet. I was able to find the 10/3 wire everywhere, cheapest was $1.89 ft.

Re: Correctly wiring a 30 to 50A extension cord

That's the same setup I'm planning on making. Where did you get the ends? I've been to lowes and home depot but neither sell that 3 prong 30a end. They do have the 50a, its not really an end but a flush mount outlet.

Re: Yep, another dryer to welder ?

I sent a text out to a licensed electrical contractor I know asking if its ok to do what I'm asking you guys, his reply was yes. After that I also searched about neutral and ground bonding at the panel and found that neutrals can land on the ground bar and vise versa, because both bars are tied toge...

Re: Yep, another dryer to welder ?

Ha ha, some say do it some say dont, what is the real deal? If it makes a difference this 30a dryer outlet comes straight from the main panel, no sub panel, and is no more than a 20ft. run.
I just want to use this thing but don't want to burn the house down.

Re: Yep, another dryer to welder ?

On your dryer receptacle, (assuming 50A), the two angled slots are your L1 and L2, and the d-shaped one on the bottom is common/ground. Assuming your machine's cord has black, white, and green, the black and white go to L1 and L2, in no particular order. The green will go to common/ground. I get th...

Re: Yep, another dryer to welder ?

Ha ha, I'm confused, it sounded like it's fine and to go for it but now house fire :o . And I do still need to run our dryer on the outlet so swapping the recepticle won't work.

I wasn't asking if it will work on a 30a circuit, Im wondering about making an adapter, or in this case an extension cord that...

Yep, another dryer to welder ?

I just got my first mig welder and was planning on using the 240 dryer outlet with an extension/adapter setup. I've done some searching and haven't really seen a definite answer to whether or not it's ok to go from a 3 prong dryer to the 3 prong welder. I'm finding people saying they do it and its f...
