Re: Etching question

... why does the etching zone decrease when I'm welding tanks on a turntable, but then I do a butt weld with the same settings and the etching is twice the size? Travel speed? If you're referring to edge joints, as in your 1st pic, my guess is gas flow is being parted by a 90' joint and dispersing ...

Lots of fantastic work here guys!

Just finished up this racing subframe. Hope it's not a buzzkill.

If the battery box looks aged, well, it's because it is. This is it's second go 'round...1st time ending in a crash, fire, and a dousing of extinguisher. Very corrosive stuff.

Re: Advice needed for creating a filet weld in aluminum

1/8" material, 150 amps is the bottom in my opinion (for starting the puddle). Totally agree with this.... now , that I spent the evening doing a few tube joints. I tend to forget that most of my work involves smaller massed parts. Thickness is there, but mass wise they call for lower amps...w...

Re: Advice needed for creating a filet weld in aluminum

While I'm still feeling my way thru this AL myself, think I can safely say that 180A on 1/8, and certainly 1/16, is a bit high...at least IMO. I've noticed wander to be an issue until somewhere up around 3/4 pedal, especially when starting. For the 1/16, I'd try 65-80A along with maybe going to 1/16...

Re: Converting bandsaw to metal ? Or Portaband

Can't beat the versatility of a portaband...that is if most of your work is small. I first made a swingarm for mine for use as a horizontal. This is my latest creation for it: DSCN0724.JPG The plywood platen for it was a "get me going" thing, but so far it's done everything I've needed. On...

Re: AL TIG woes

^ +1...Looks like it's readily available for mig, tig filler not so much. Have seen it referenced though so it is out there. @dirtmidget...no problem posting up "as welded" condition, just that these were cleaned up well before joining on here. Would much rather have shown them that way to...

Re: AL TIG woes

Dunkster, Frankly I think you are being a little tough on yourself. These results are not as bad as you suggest. I would try reducing the current by about 5-10 Amps, maybe a touch more, and see what the difference is. And welcome to the forum ! Trev Probably so...believe I inherited an OCD gene fro...

AL TIG woes

New guy looking for thoughts/suggestions on what's going on here. So I've done the stacking drill to the point of finally being somewhat satisfied with bead appearance and puddle definition. Not as perfect and consistent as I'd like, but I know this will only come with everyday seat time, which unfo...

Re: new guy from FL

Thanks guys.

Will throw some pics up, along with my issues, in a new thread soon as I can take them. Didn't want any good advice to get buried in an introduction thread.

new guy from FL

Hello everyone, long time lurker here. Finally decided to join after banging my head 1 too many times over AL tig process. Laid my first beads some 33 yrs ago with a Linclon buzzbox at age 13 after being fascinated seeing what a little juice and skill could turn an 1/8" rod of steel into. Wound...
