Thanks for the comments. It was probably overloaded and normally wouldn't have broken there like that. Those logging guys are hard on stuff. :D

Blade life

So I bought a Northern Tool dry cut chop saw off CL and the saw has served me well. I bought a Morse blade for it and it was good for a long while. It got dull and I had it sharpened and after no more than 40 cuts I can tell it's getting dull already. It's to the point I just about can't keep using ...

Re: Skidder repair

It was a repair/modification. It didn't have the braces tha extend towards the cylinder and since it ripped in that direction I added those. The rest was just repaired. I used 7018's.

Did some field work a while back with my 210mp and a new Kohler generator. Pretty happy with it.

Re: To grow or not to grow?

I guess my friends that say don't do it are just more used to having that steady day job and not having to beat the bushes and wonder if they're gonna make it sometimes. I agree with you johnathan about keeping the day job. I'm nowhere near where I'm being pressed out of my day job and I'm really st...

Re: Did ya ever.....

I've got a good friend that also worked for BMW and if a job was supposed to take two hours he got paid for two hours no matter how long it took or which rookie screwed it up and left him to fix it. So he started his own business and he's doing well but his advise to me was if you've got a decent jo...

Re: Did ya ever.....

I agree. I hope my little girl finds a proper bloke. If there are any to be had around here by then. I'm gonna try to offer the local Boy Scouts, which my little boy is a part of, the opportunity to get their welding badge. Hopefully they'll leave the house with more than a badge. Maybe a desire to ...

Re: Did ya ever.....

I was laid off from a fabrication job I was at making $15 an hour at and working 40-80 hours or more at times a week. I welded, did the layouts, painted, loaded trucks, swept the floor, etc... Not being one to just draw a check I took a delivery job with City Electric Supply making $12 an hour to ri...

Re: Q700 dry cut

I've already got a cheap 14". I was just thinking that the smaller blades and the cheaper prices might save some $$ and I could just use the 14" when the size of the material required it. Seems like a better made saw than the 14" I have now.

Q700 dry cut

Anybody know much about these saws? At a 7" blade it's got its limits but it's cheaper since it's smaller and I have a 14" to cut something bigger. From what I saw in the videos it'll just about cut everything I've ever cut in my shop with the exception of a few things. Another guy on YouT...

Roller stands

Bought myself three roller stands from Harbor Freight and they're pretty handy. Sturdy and smooth they do what they should. At $15 a piece you can't go wrong if you need something like that.

Re: To grow or not to grow?

I totally agree with you. I weld at my day job but you know how it is. Mig welding 40 hours a week gets old. I really just like having a repair to do or something to fab so my mind doesn't get full of cobwebs. It's good to make some extra too. I don't wanna work for free either. I've got a lot inves...

To grow or not to grow?

Hey guys. I've been listening to the tips and tricks podcasts lately and really enjoy them. I thought that Roy and Jonathan had these big operations going on but when they said it was side work I was surprised. I'm sure they're in demand and probably could make it on there own. So it made me think t...

Re: Welding Tips & Tricks Podcast

I've got a question that's more tech related and probably a dumb question but, does listening to a podcast use your data? If it's downloaded it shouldn't use the data, right?

Re: Small portable welding table

My uncle just gave me a smaller roll around metal table with no top on it so I bet you know what I'm thinking now. Man that's a good idea! I really like the table and clamps. Been wanting a fixture table myself so I might give that a try too. Nice work.

I just do a three step sanding process and use Minwax stain and clear. Also use 0000 steel wool to smooth out. Thanks for the nice replies. The powder coated finish really does look good.

I see this guy twice a year at thanksgiving and Christmas so the good buddy rate was where I was at. In over 10 years of welding he's never given me any work and probably never will so... no loss.

I've got some 1"x1" angle cut at 1" long welded to where the boards will be flush with the top of the frame. Eight pieces of angle per board. Then drilled holes through the angle and screwed the boards down. I also have a piece of tubing ripped down and spanning the middle of both boa...

Customer service

So this scenario happened the other day at my shop. A guy wants me to weld something on his lawnmower that he does business with. It's a Walker mower. I do the job didn't take 10 minutes total and I say "how about $20". The guy looks at me like I went to the bank on him and pays me. The wh...
