Lots of good suggestions here guys, thanks.
I like the idea of the square aluminium backing bar - perfect!
Have also considered lopping the hex off a Allen head bolt, grinding the end of the old screw flat and welding the hex to the screw.
Will post pics of whatever I do, thanks for the tips.

Re: Tig repair of lathe chuck screw
Some flat machinist files will enable you to broach those hexes back into shape. Going to require a bit of "doing", but can be done. If you have a hydraulic press, you can buy the broach yourself and just do it that way. Or, you can make a broach and do it yourself. I know, all that DIY i...

Re: Tig repair of lathe chuck screw
Thanks for the tips guys. Dipper, the parts are available...but I am seeing $50-ish EACH for those screws. If I repair, I'll get into the hex with a tiny carbide bit on my Dremel to make the best hex fit I can. Coldie - I already have a 3-jaw self-centring chuck, came with the lathe along with a bun...

Re: 'New' Hercus 260 lathe
Thanks guys.
Josh, regarding the wife's Mini...I'd better behave. What you can't see is the other side of the garage, which already has two of my motorcycles, my welding bench, all my welding gear and my gun safe. And my shed out the back is full. So I'd better let the Mini stay inside!

Tig repair of lathe chuck screw
Hi all. I've picked up a 'new' lathe, ex school, with a bit of damage here and there. The Pratt Burnerd 4-jaw chuck has damage to 2 of the 4 jaw adjustment screws. The plan is to clean these and then build up material before turning off the excess and hand finishing. Any tips on which filler? Silico...

Re: 'New' Hercus 260 lathe
535mm is equivalent to 22" give or take ;) Defines the length of part that can be machined between centers. I can't tell from the pictures, but does it cut metric and SAE threads? If so, that's a great little lathe!!! It may require a change in gears to do it, but its still rather handy to hav...

Hercy 3.jpg Great excitement here in South Horse Trailer. Was offered a lathe via a mate...stuck my hand up for it, expecting to make an offer...and the price was...FREE! :D Wow. (Okay, I gave them a carton of Coopers Pale Ale for it.) Given away by a local school. It gets better. It is in amazing ...

Re: Filler rod melts into blob that doesn't fall
I think this was my problem too starting with aluminium, trying to add filler before the puddle is hot enough. You need to watch the puddle 'til it looks like a mirror, then add filler. +1. Get that puddle nice and shiny. And watch your torch angle. Too shallow an angle and your filler will ball up...

Re: Motorcycle subframe crack repair
Seems KTM have some work to do on this particular subframe design for the 990 SMT as there are lots of failures posted up online. I suspect that the next generation of this bike will have a brand new design of subframe. Definitely... Seems like the stresses on this section are actually bending/flex...

Re: H&F horizontal band saw (Aussie)
Nice one Kym! I have the BS-5S from H&F but I found that it is necessary to set it up properly to make straight cuts. The orientation of material to be cut also seems to have an effect on cut quality. Flo Hey Flo, how's it going? Mine is cutting nice and accurately at the moment, haven't spent ...

Never knew that - I'll have to ask around. I suspect I'll eventually discover the alloy type via a KTM forum or a technical manual somewhere.
Mind you...I'll probably hit it with 5356 regardless!

Re: Motorcycle subframe crack repair
Any chance you can call the company for material type and/or filler metal recommendation? I've done a few steel ones (for family), have not seen an aluminum one up close yet. Hey Dave. Although there's a chance I might soon uncover details on what specific alloy has been used to make the OEM subfra...

How big is the blade? Is it just a regular portaban blade or is it bigger? You beat me to it. I was going to ask the same thing. Do you mount it on the bench or floor? Is it bigger than a bread box? 'Longer than a bread box?' Um, I don't know, as I've never owned or seen a bread box! :D But serious...

Re: Motorcycle subframe crack repair
I personally doubt that material is 6000 series, but it may be. Your idea of gouging the crack and welding it up will be fine in my opinion and is very similar to what I have done many, many times for a Dirt Tracker pal of mine. His KTM is also only welded on the sides. Must be a stress/flex calcul...

I'm also using denim. I consider it a consumable. Of course it's not exactly flame retardant, but stops general wear and tear on the hoses from being dragged about. Also, it fades nicely when washed and if I roll it up just above the torch handle, it has huge hipster appeal. K Hey Kym, good ...

H&F Band Saw .jpg Some time ago I read a post by Coldman, who had picked up a horizontal band saw by Aussie outfit Hare & Forbes as an answer to the problems he'd been having with abrasive saws. I also grabbed one just before Christmas. Wow. What a great change. Accurate, repeatable cutting...
