Thanks, Poland308. The box on the 6011 did say it could be used for AC. I was just reading another forum and on guy was saying 7014 was a good rod for some applications on AC.

Beginner's Equipment Review Licoln v160T vs Clarke 95E

I am an amateur welder, rank beginner. I took a ten week course at the local tech center a few years ago that covered all the welding basics from brazing through tig. Naturally, I don't remember much. Anyway, I have been out of it for a couple of years and just recently got back into it. I bought a ...

Man I have always wanted to get into electronics like that... I even bought an Elenco electronics lab, but I never make it past transistors....

Thanks. It doesn't come with a Stick electrode holder, though. I assume I have to make one?

Re: Three Welding projects for new to TIG Welder

Alright, I am close to getting a Lincoln inverted 160 T for about 850 used, including a new pedal. They list at $1500 new and can go down to 5 amps. So, I think based on what I have read around here this would be a decent buy if it checks out?

Re: Three Welding projects for new to TIG Welder

Hello Fatjackdurham, Back to your original questions... 150 amps would be sufficient unless you are welding field artillery. One feature you might want to consider would be pulse. I have found it to be handy for doing buildup on small parts without melting them into a blob. In fact I just repaired ...

Re: Shielding gas

When I took my welding course, we did something with the tungsten to make a sort of round blob on the tip to weld aluminum, but I don't remember exactly what. Can someone remind me what that is? It was like we just ran an arc over the work or some steel and the tungsten melted into a sort of sphere....

Re: Three Welding projects for new to TIG Welder

It's a hammerless 38 break action 5 shot 4" barrel 157751 on butt. The ridge at top of barrel gives numerous patent dates C1880. I tried to look it up in a gun book, but had trouble identifying it. Sounds like a second model S&W safety hammer less. Mine is a 3rd model, whose sn start from ...

Re: Three Welding projects for new to TIG Welder

If you feel up to a project, my 38 hammerless was the first gun my father ever owned. I've never fired it, the cylinder is a bit loose so I'm not sure of it. I've got a filler for high carbon steel. It was quite expensive per LB but it'd take very little for any firearm project. It lays down like b...

Re: Tig Amps - how low to go?

Interesting... 10 Amp units are far more common and less expensive, if I wanted to stay below $600. Now, when I read the specs, and it refers to "pre-flow/post-flow" does this mean the gas is controlled automatically with a solenoid as opposed to a handle valve? Based on the info you guys ...

Re: Three Welding projects for new to TIG Welder

I too am in VT. I'm near route 7 south of Rutland. My experience in welding gun parts is very limited. I'm game for anything. I'd be happy to give you an opportunity to try out my Dynasty 280DX. It's more welder than you'll need for little parts, but one thing I like about it is it goes so . low I ...

Re: Three Welding projects for new to TIG Welder

I wouldn't bother welding the last two pieces. Just make new ones. Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk I disagree. Since, in these cases, new ones can readily be made, this is excellent practice for similar parts that would, on replacement, degrade the value of the firearm. It's also excellent pra...

Re: Tig Amps - how low to go?

I have done a lot of practise on the really small stuff. In fact I often weld together the remaining stubs of my 1.6mm filler rods just. I can wind it back to 5 amps DC and 10 amps AC. At any amps, but particularly low amps, you'll have a fuzzing mess on your hands if it's not super clean. Meanwhil...

Re: Tig Amps - how low to go?

All the features you mentioned will make small work easier. How small will determine if you need less than 30 amps. Do you have a picture or example of what you want to work on. Scratch start takes some practice and if the parts are small or thin enough you might have trouble with the arc wandering...

Tig Amps - how low to go?

Hello, Please refer to my intro post for some photos of projects I would like to do. My first question to this group is, how low amperage does my tig welder need to be able to go to do small part welding like that for steel? I can get a cheaper Lotos 200 AC/DC welder with features like square wave a...

Three Welding projects for new to TIG Welder

Greetings, I am 45 and living Morrisville, VT, and I have aspirations of becoming a gunsmith and metal working hobbyist. I have taken a welding course at my local technical center, and mostly have done stick welding since, badly, and a little gas welding. My gunsmith has mentored me on a few project...
