Re: Why are my aluminum welds turning out like this?

Usually when I get dull welds on ally its because of arc gap. Doesnt really happen anymore on butts, fillets, outside corners etc. If it looks a bit dull and the ripples are a bit here and there on inside corners I usually find I haven't extended the tungsten to allow it to get in close. Try it out ...

Re: Beginner question regarding filler rod

I dumped most of my oxy rods, not much use for them. They were just normal mild steel, also quite ductile and as MinnesotaDave pointed out fencing wire, coat hangers and tig rods, any old shit works just as well . Definately different from tig rods. Tig rods don't bend anywhere near as easilly as ox...

Re: Lets talk china Tigs?

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Your time would be better spent buying an older mig (of a known good brand) for a steal, that would form a solid platform and then fix it up. +1 There is, or should be a second hand market. I'd rather buy a top notch item that has done a few years than...

Re: Series on Tig Welding Aluminum

There was a question just posted in the forums regarding pulse. I'm pretty sure its the same confusion I had at one stage regarding pulse and how it works with a foot pedal or a 2T/4T setup. Sounds counter intuitive that a food pedal could still have input when the machine has taking over amperage/p...

Re: Pluse Setting

Bit messy to explain. If he's talking about the scenario where he is using 33 pulses per second, rule of 33 or whatever it is he is using the pulse setting on the machine. You can have the machine pulse and still use the foot pedal to control amperage/heat or use the buttons on the torch to initiate...

Still a prototype but coming very soon apparently. According to their Instagram post. I like it over my Lincoln for two main reasons. Lenses are closer to the eyes so wider field of view with smaller glass so its like wearing glasses as opposed to looking out a porthole. Secondly the clear lens out ...

Drift trike

Anyone made one of these? I bought a couple of BMX's ages ago for this project for my son and finally got a few hours free today to have a crack at it. Stripped it of the useless bits and most designs call for the top tube to be removed but I didn't trust that single down tube so I cut a pie slice o...

Re: Cutting L-angle and feel stupid lol

Yeah its a pain in the ass. But if you can only change angles one way you have to flip it end over end as the others have said. Some times its easier with some scrap pieces to visualize which way you need to cut especially if it gets a bit complex. Not my favorite thing, its like doing cornice, thin...

I use this and its about 40 to 60 bucks on ebay. Has a flat diamond surface thats replaceable and a sharp edge up top for cutting tungstens if they get badly fouled. I just drilled a 1/8 hole up top to act as a guide. Not sure whats available in the US market but its just a knock off of a drill doct...

Re: I like this guy, can we steal him?

I don't know that its a problem with young people in their late teens and early 20's so much. I think people should have a basic concept of tools and how they work/purpose far earlier than that. I learnt by trial and error mostly from a very early age and I also live in an urban area not a farm. Eg,...

Re: Frustrations with vertical up aluminum TIG

could just be the picture but it seems you start to loose your focus on torch angel and start to favor the right side. just looking as HAZ. cb ^This Its easy to favor a side on a fillet weld and not realize you weren't quite centered even on flat. Having to reposition as you go uphill probably exag...

Re: Anyone here into anvils/forging?

That power hammer combo/press combo is awesome. Fantastic idea with the adjustable spring, sure beats the levers I've seen on some. And nice to tidy footprint for some much equipment. I have zero experience with hydraulics but I'm sure I'll explore it one day. I imagine its not cheap though. Nice wo...

Re: The pedal has me spoiled.

Problem is anything else that hand does whether button, slider etc puts a wobble in my bead. I'm clumsy and jerky enough at the best of times. What about something like a clothes peg, you know the plastic ones with a spring in the middle. If you could build a potentiometer into that and just run it ...

I think its probably possible with current tech too. In fact the VR with my samsung note 5 phone and the free goggles they sent was outstanding for what it was. Put a leather shroud around it, add a second camera for depth and field of view and piss off all the phone stuff and you have probably enou...

Re: Anyone here into anvils/forging?

Pissed down rain so didn't work today. Went to the garage instead :) Still need to cut out some pads for the feet and fill legs with sand. Welded in those M14 nuts so I could screw in some plugs once filled. But otherwise perfectly level both way and its a tripod so doesn't rock on uneven ground. ht...

Used to tick me off as a kid with roller skates, when you hold the center of the bearing the outer spins just fine. When you install and have two bearings on that axle because they didnt have spacers in between when tightened it up it would put lateral force on the bearing and bind it up and so you'...

Id of the bearing is 1/2, so slightly larger bore through the rest of the wheel for axle clearance. You're putting a bearing on each side yeah like on a skateboard wheel? Some of the ones I've seen just had a single bearing but it seems like a good way to chew it out. Can't really tighten them up ei...
