Re: Sandy textured aluminum tig weld... why? tig gurus help
How large are the pieces you are welding? Aluminum tends to do this when it gets too hot.

Haha you get used to it! The key is to get in feet first and sit on the door bar. Road race/ drift/ rally cars don't have the luxury of swing outs like drag cars. Drag cage regulations are very lax.

I am sorry I could not be of more assistance. If you are forced to weld it, just run a bunch of small welds and let the material stay cool.

If it is not too much trouble you may be further ahead cutting the whole piece off and starting over.

Re: Yellow smoking porosity in steel angle iron ! Help
If it was already welded there is a good chance you are pulling the zinc into the weld from the backside of the angle iron. Galvanized is some nasty stuff. Once the zinc reaches a certain temp it seems to pop and your puddle explodes.

Re: Yellow smoking porosity in steel angle iron ! Help
Sounds like you are trying to weld galvanized steel. Try grinding the material down further and see if it helps. The only way I have ever had luck welding galvanized is taking the material down past the coating. If you use a flap disc you will clearly see when you break through. Make sure you do the...

The car will be used mainly for drifting however the cage is build to be FIA compliant. It will be legal for any type of racing he wants to do. The windshield braces are a required member in any FIA cage as of 2005. In the event of a rollover the windshield is the weakest area

This is my first cage welded with my new Dynasty. I used to use a torch mounted switch and no amperage control. I must say I have fallen in love with th Miller pedals. They stay put and don't slide around so out of position welds are achievable.

Re: Can you visually tell you are using enough amps?
You will definitely get a feel for it the more you weld. What I have noticed it that if you are welding most types of steels, you can physically watch the puddle dance as your weld penatrates all the way through. Usually it will start to swirl just before it blows out. I think it is good to run test...

I have had this issue before. My first thought is to go into the hidden menus and adjust arc start amperage. It is probably set too high. Give that a shot and see if it helps

Re: Help me choose between 3 tig set ups.
I found myself in the exact same position as you a few months ago. I was looking into the Everlast and HTP primarily. AC frequency was an absolute must have for me. I would have went with the HTP had I not come across a very lightly used Dynasty 200DX for $2500 CAD. At that price I had to buy it. So...

Re: ??Pure Tungsten Funky Start??
I would recommend zirconated tungsten on aluminum with a transformer machine. I have always had better luck with it on aluminum. Seems to be a little smoother then pure if that makes any sense.

If it makes anyone feel better I had no idea what an arc pig was. I also did not get the impression anyone was being snobby or rude.

Re: titanium tig practice
I very recently welded Titanium for the first time. It was 1mm thick tubing for practice. The back side of the weld was purged (obviously) and I used a #18 gas lense. I got a tiny bit of color after my workpiece heat soaked a bit. For the most part I got a very light straw color. I found it disapate...

Haha oh how I would love to weld 24k gold. I am not sure tig is a common way to fuse gold though. Although it would probably work.

We all started somewhere. There is no way to learn besides practicing! What shielding gas and flow are you running on your machine right now?

If you are using a manual pulse I know most guys run in the realm of 150 amps on .120 wall. So you may want to even experiment with more heat. I guess it would be related to how you pulse

Titanium prep
So I am going to be working with titanium a little bit now. Just curious what people use to cut it? I have a water cooled bandsaw that I will be using. I am mostly curious on the blade choice. Also, what would be considered acceptable to de-bur/ prep the edges? Is a zirconium sanding belt ok or shou...

Thanks! I really hope to become allot more comfortable with this stuff. It is certainly fun to weld. Tacking it is a different story though. I had a friend hold a #8 gas lense to the backside of each tack for me. It sucked but I am sure I will develope a better method.

Re: Help with tig welding roll cage
That looks quite good! Glad you got it figured out. I used to use the 1 amp per .001" rule but found it was not hot enough. After I started welding hotter and slower my welds turned out allot better. I also found pulling the torch back to add filler helped too but that is just personal preferen...

My first go at titanium! Really excited about this stuff. I know there is a bit of colour there which is not acceptable in most industries. I will need more practice before I try anything structural. I would be using it more for exhausts and intakes.

Re: Help with tig welding roll cage
What amperage are you welding at? On my old welder I would weld .095 DOM at about 110amp with a trigger setup so it was all in. I also use 1/16 er70s-2. The biggest advice I can give (not knowing your current skill level) it make sure your tungsten is sharp. Any time I get even the slightest imperfe...

Thank you! I am glad to be a part of the group. I figure it would be great to be able to ask questions directly to people rather then search engines. I am sure this will be great and I hope I can contribute as much as possible.
