Re: Too much heat? Contamination?

Wow, great tips guys, much appreciated. I'll check my gas lines and get myself some stubby gas lenses.

Re: Too much heat? Contamination?

Did you back purge that keg before you welded it? That helps your puddle behave but it looks like really laid the heat in there. You are likely to get cracks in the HAZ. I do quite a bit of keg welding. They are 304 series, 18ga. and purging is a must. I usually weld fittings on at about 55 amps an...

Re: Too much heat? Contamination?

I probably was pulling the rod out of the gas shield between dips due to the position I was in. I thought my gas pressure was plenty (without being too much), around 10L/m. Maybe I should switch to a gas lense?

Re: Too much heat? Contamination?

Filler rod was 316, fittings were all 316 and I'm fairly certain the keg is 316.

Too much heat? Contamination?

Still very new to Tig, so I'd like to work out what I'm doing wrong here.

Re: When to MIG over TIG?

Ok great. I don't mind the time it takes, it's only hobby level stuff anyway.

Good to see another Brisvegas resident here too.

When to MIG over TIG?

I'm welding up some automotive accessories - rock sliders, ladders for racks, grab rails etc. All are mild steel around 50mmx3.2mm tubing. I've been using my TIG to do the work as my MIG is a temperamental beast, mostly because it's a bit rusty and sticks quite a bit (my fault for not maintaining it...

Re: Help a TIG noob out

Well it might not be stainless, I just assumed it was as he told me it was, how can I check? I just ran a magnet over it and the magnet sticks pretty solid, unlike the stainless keg I have, which only mildly attracts the magnet. So I'm guessing not stainless? And as for the possible coating, I did h...

Help a TIG noob out

First post, so go easy. I recently bought myself a 200A AC/DC inverter TIG welder, for various uses around my workshop. I've always had a MIG, but never a TIG and have never welded TIG until now. Anyway, I had some stainless tube lying around that a mate had given a while ago, so thought I'd use tha...
