Re: F-450 Broken Transmission Housing.

Nick I bead blasted the smaller pieces and used aluminum acid on the rest of the case. I did the cleanest prep work possible, no other way to weld cast. As you know it's very dirty on its own. I did fuse the inside and then ground down to clean metal, then welded a small root bead followed by a cap....

Re: Welding a cracked Chevrolet bellhousing

Dirty cast is much harder to get a pretty bead on that new clean aluminum. Your work on this cast is way above average in my book. I did a similar repair recently, it's on here and labeled as F-450 Housing if ya want to see my junk.

Re: F-450 Broken Transmission Housing.

The bellhousing bolts were seized in the aluminum with corrosion and he pulled straight back with a come a long until it broke/came out. What you see in that picture is the only area to have broke in 2 directions.

Re: Welding a cracked Chevrolet bellhousing

I usually match the hole diameter to thickness. That way you get full prnetration. Plus like Sandow said, you don't want to miss the end, if you see you missed just use a carbide burr to get it.

Re: F-450 Broken Transmission Housing.

Thank you Sandow, only if it holds will it be epic. I haven't noticed stress cracks in any welds or I would have stopped immediately. I am going to build up and smooth out the factory ribs to help prevent failure. I will say the thing that helps the most is its huge heatsink and it allows for me to ...

F-450 Broken Transmission Housing.

1989 F-450 housing was damaged during removal. Something about bolts with the heads broken off and corroded to the aluminum. Then they attached a come a long to the tailshaft housing and pulled until it broke. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160315/8111a1099ffecf30dd7fcd6e4a5bafa2.jpg Housing view...

Re: Welding a cracked Chevrolet bellhousing

I would drill each end, V one side with carbide, then weld. Go to opposite side and use carbide burr down to clean metal and weld. I feel if you grind the crack with an abrasive wheel you leave some debris behind plus you open the back of the weld to air and you may need to flow argon to the back si...

I am curious to see the fixture you build to help with distortion. That's gonna be a lot of passes. I wish I had some good advice on D2, but I have no experience with it. Please keep us informed of your progress.

Great video series. I liked the way you put a dab of weld on the plate first then used the dam between the tubes.

I have subscribed and really like your channel because it's real world.

Re: Build Up on A Rim

I hate dealing with the internet safety inspectors and the liability nazi's when ya post. I certainly don't mean to be one but I wouldn't do this job and have a paper trail back to me. That being said. Frequency 100 or a bit higher for a focused arc, I feel that helps when doing build up vs a low fr...

I agree with Artie. Your instructor should be able to demonstrate ANY and ALL tests he/she is requiring you to take. I instruct (not welding) on occasion and would be embarrassed to ask something of someone I couldn't do myself. If all the students feel the same approach the instructor as a whole, i...

Re: Why can I never get a puddle on aluminum tubing?

After they learn what the puddle looks like, then it's on to get the pedal to the metal and let it puddle fast. Get some filler in and blend your 2 parts, at that point everything calms down and acts normal.
