Borg Warner engineer in charge of the IndyCar program and confirmed through Lincoln Electric, yes high carbon deposit designed for high temperature operation, exactly what I need and want. Thanks though.

Does anyone know where to get this TIG rod online for a good price? I've looked around my favourite retailers and they've never heard of it. I need to weld to a stainless turbocharger housing.

After, I tried to keep the tacks shallow. I didn't clean it all up since it's just an exhaust pipe but I wiped off an area with acetone and it's nice and shiny metal underneath.Poland308 wrote:Did you butter up the two halves before or after you tacked them up?

Keep forgetting to post my experiences with SolarFlux. This stuff is gold if backpurging stainless isn't reasonable or practical. I use it with ISO alcohol, works GREAT!!!

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
This was terrifying but so exciting! I posted earlier the beginnings of this, now it's all done, just need to add some sensors and pressure references, maybe a brace to the block. Last week I finally got off my ass and bought the plenum metal, and went to my friend's shop with a big press with my an...

Nothing particularly nice or even TIG but I wanted to post here to ask you guys: after learning, becoming comfortable with TIG and only doing that for a while, did anyone else find their MIG technique changed? I'm finding that on 1/8" and thinner sheet metal, I'm MIGing like TIG, in that I'm st...

Finished the flange side of my intake manifold. Next need to mount the fuel rail and then wait until the engine's back in the car to figure out the plenum dimensions

Thanks Rudy. I've already ordered it so I'll see how it is. Soft would be good, would make it easier to make it nice. The car sees a max of 30psi boost and I'm using 3/16" thick material so I don't need anything especially strong.

Everyone, please remember... When you're looking at work that impresses you, work that makes you question your own, you are looking at goals. Objectives. The place you want to be with a few years' more experience. NONE of these weldporn jockeys came out of the womb doing that, and every one has had...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Been doing lots of work on my race car getting it ready. The biggest undertaking fabrication wise is making my own intake manifold. I have the head flange with injector bungs, tubes for the runners and trumpets from Sweden so the hardest part will be the plenum. I know what I want to do but it will ...

Can you tell me where you got the megaflo gas lens? I've sent emails to some vendors and including the one where I got my i-head rotohead but I have yet to receive a answer. Took some detective work but I realized I never got the megaflo... I got the CK version. I also gave up looking for the TEC p...

Hello everyone I know jody use to talk a lot of about CK torches an promote them. I have seen all the funky angle ones he has. But haven't heard he mentions CK or any other good brands. Is there a brand of tig torches out there now that are just kick butt and great quality. Just want to make sure I...

Helium mixing, check valve?
Hey guys, I'm getting a small tank of helium and I have a Western 411 Y. I have a spare typical 2 dial flow regulator to put on that tank. Do I still need a check valve or would the regulator take care of that if I adjust it for a certain amount of desired flow? If I do, link me to a good one to get...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Pretty cool weekend project, I was asked by a friend who owns a shop to come do the plumbing on a 993 GT2 they are building for a guy. Pretty flattering to get that kind of task entrusted. The customer bought an exhaust for $10,000 which was supposed to be a drop-in and it's a disaster. I had to cut...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
After talking to Borg Warner engineers at PRI, they told me that the recirc valve in the EFR turbos is part of the recipe for the lightning fast transient response (only needing to repressurize the compressor cover, not the entire intake), so I'm putting it back in and needed to delete the blowoff v...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
I recently found out that my racecar fuel, ethanol, is corrosive to raw aluminum. I tried asking every anodizer within 100km if they could hard-anodize the inside of my surge tank and I had no luck, everyone who even does it told me I have to cut it apart (which is not true, a friend who hard anodiz...

Re: Mirror Welding
When I decided to get more serious with my racecar and add the full cage, I already had a rollbar that was very well made and the hoop fit quite tightly to the body. The prospect of cutting it out, cutting out the thick base plates, then trying to fit it back in and patch it up was daunting so I got...

Re: 5356 - corrosion stress cracking
I got permission to share the gentleman's opinion publicly so here is what he said. Frank G. Armao Director, Aluminum Technology Lincoln Electric In order to get stress corrosion cracking (SCC), you need 3 things. First you need a susceptible microstructure. You get that when you expose any aluminum...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
A friend of mine found a turbine housing that is perfect for his needs but had a weird v-band. He had an adapter with the right v-band and he needed the extra length anyway, so I mated them up for him. I did the spark test and it made dense long yellow sparks, which seems to confirm what I read that...

Yeah from what I read, 5356 is still ultimately stronger than 4943

Re: 5356 - corrosion stress cracking
Thanks. Was it you're conclusion that 4943 is best for cooling system components or is 4043 acceptable as well? Anything that's not high Mg filler (ie 5xxx) should be fine (and the 5356 appears to be fine in reality, just not ideal), just 4943 seems to have all of the desirable properties of 4043 a...
