Re: Aluminum Boat Transom Corrosion Repair
The boat sat on the driveway for a couple of years while I did other projects. Started back on it, used HTS 735 II braze rod to fix these and other leaking rivets. Easy to use with map gas, stopped the leaks that were "cool cracking" and other leaking rivets. However, I did try tig patchin...

Re: Argon Leak
The surfaces like fine, no visible problems on either. Thanks for the direction, I'll try getting a new flow meter first.

Argon Leak
While welding some steel, I was having problems with contamination. I used the the bubble test and found a leak fore and aft of the main nut that connects with the argon tank. I had snugged the nut down tight. The argon tank is fairly new, but I'm not sure if it is the tank or the flow meter. I foun...

Re: Aluminum Boat Transom Corrosion Repair
Never thought I would encounter un-weldable aluminum in boat repair, but I will have to give this a try. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Aluminum Boat Transom Corrosion Repair
I looked over the boat and there is not a weld on it, thousands of rivets. I have done some welding over some other holes and cratersm even enclosed the enlarged holes but it is not easy. The boat is covered in "Gluvit", so I will stick to overwelding the craters and holes for strength and...

Aluminum Boat Transom Corrosion Repair
I removed the rotton transom board and discovered a lot of corrosion on a 40 year old boat transom from installed galvanized bolts. I've been recently getting used to my fairly old Lincoln Precision TIG 185, and finally have enjoyed making a few repairs on a couple of leaky old boats that needed rep...

Re: Welder trapped inside an Electrician.
Welcome! Just bought a used TIG machine a few months ago, and also learned a lot from Jody's videos. But there are questions that come up, sometimes with new materials like Aluminum that need to be answered by people with experience. This is the right place.

Re: Having problem tig welding thin wall Al filet joint
Tried the 1/16 tungsten and feeder rod, definitely helped with control on thin material, especially when welding some small conduit on another one of my projects. Also, using the feeder rod gap-fill technique has helped with the aluminum and conduit. But the big solution in this situation was the al...

Re: Having problem tig welding thin wall Al filet joint
There was an improvement, but I'm pretty sure in other situations that could be the problem. I will try getting some 1/16 tungsten electrodes. Anything else can be done in a vertical or near vertical otherwise open air situation to prevent air being "back drafted" into the weld? Some of th...

Re: Having problem tig welding thin wall Al filet joint
The material was clean and I think percentage was right, but I believe there was some splatter on the electrode. The sharper tungsten helped a lot on the start. I tried again with much better results. Thanks!

Having problem tig welding thin wall Al filet joint
Experimenting with my newly owned used Lincoln Precision TIG 185 using thin wall aluminum. I tried a lap joint and went well. However, when I tried to use that piece to do a filet weld , had problem creating a joining puddle between the horizontal piece and the vertical piece. Using 1/32 Aluminum &q...

Re: Hello everybody!
Thanks! I'm pretty stoked about owning a tig machine. I'm looking forward learning to use it, good to have help from those who have been there. I like the superbike avatar you chose.

Hello everybody!
I just bought an old but barely used Lincoln Pecision tig 185 and looking forward to being able to do weld repairs on aluminum products including several old leaky boats several friends own. I started welding several years ago with Oxy/acety doing both welding and brazing, then enjoyed stick welding...
