When I first got started welding at home, I had picked up a century welder that was constantly live (another problem) but rven though it would handle most sheetmetal jobs without problems when the metal got thicker than 1/8 inch I started to preheat it with a oxy-acetelyne torch and would heat it red hot and then weld I wound up with nice looking welds and strong enough to build a car frame.
I eventually gave that welder away and purchased the Hobart Handler, but it let me stretch my bucks for a while. By that time I had picked up an OX weld torch that could do the job also.
